    Installing A Detroit 8v71 or 8v92 engine into a 2.5 ton or 5 ton M54A2

If you like your 2-stroke diesels it was Clean Cams Technology Systems that built overhaul kits that basically made the engines compliant with 2010+ emissions standards. This is one of my tier 2 compliant 6-71 engines coming out in 2021. We got funding to replace the engine 3 years ahead of its...

I think my head gasket failed

I am currently installing a 2004 vintage 6.5 engine in my CUCV. I bought it sight unseen on eBay. I'm guessing it has 100-150k miles. I pulled the heads to renew gaskets and there was valve recession and cracks. American Cylinder head in Oakland CA installed pins in the cracks. They seemed...

I think my head gasket failed

The GM pre-cups are smooth on the interiors. Here is a pic of the inside of some Amazon units.

I think my head gasket failed

The part that makes me leery of the aftermarket heads are the pre-cups. It's a very special material, I think Nimonic 80. I don't believe the Chinese pre-cups are cast from the same material. I don't have any experience with aftermarket heads so I can't share anything beyond this.

I think my head gasket failed

Did you have an obvious blow-out in the head gasket? Cracking between the valves is essentially normal for these engines and I don't think it is detrimental. I think that relief cut in the face of the head is there to encourage cracking to occur in that area. The guys repairing them are using...

    Installing A Detroit 8v71 or 8v92 engine into a 2.5 ton or 5 ton M54A2

I actually built a pair of 6-71 engines that met US EPA Tier 2 emissions requirements. Basically, they ground all the lift off the cams and then added a turbo to bring the power back. It was similar to EGR but all done in cylinder.

    M1008 throttle smoke

Run it with the radiator cap off and watch for bubbles in the coolant.

    Installing A Detroit 8v71 or 8v92 engine into a 2.5 ton or 5 ton M54A2

The people with the knowledge are all probably dead by now but it wasn't unheard of for truckers to get a reliable 500hp from an inline 6-71. The 2-stroke is a very long engine due to the air box.

Pinion gear on starter won't disengage from ring/flywheel

Relays can get permanently magnetized which causes them to stick on.

I think my head gasket failed

ARP's newer studs have sockets for Allen keys so you can run them after installing the head. Yes, it should take very little clearance to use studs provided you hold them in the head prior to setting it on the block.

Glow plug lost through combustion chamber cup

On your 6.2/6.5 engines use an OEM black RTV or "The Right Stuff" for all of your sheet metal items Do not use RTV in places oil can pool such as your lift pump adapter plate. RTV is permeable and will weep oil if submerged. Use anaerobic gasket maker for machined surfaces such as your timing...

Need Some Help with Rear Axle Seal "blow out"

Ok, I have done the math. These numbers are slightly approximate and remember, this is the Dana 60 as that is what I have apart. I measured 12.3 threads per inch on the nut. That means each turn is 1/12.3 inches of movement. I counted 16 holes in the locking washer. It is reversible so it has...

Need Some Help with Rear Axle Seal "blow out"

There shouldn't be preload. Tapered roller bearings need 0.001-0.003" of clearance. This applies to a very wide range of applications. I would think the 50ftlbs is to seat the bearing and each locking position is 0.003" apart. So, as long as you've backed it off and stopped by the next locking...

    Rewire an -803a or 802a for 416/240 3ph?

I have wired up other generators in 12 lead before. I don't see why this one would be different. 416V is close enough to 480V you should be able to run at full rating. You would likely have to derate for 380V. Depending on the type of sensing for your AVR, it it wants 200V range you simply sense...

    Slantback hatch gasket question.

I don't know this application specifically but a little lube can help the parts slide past each other. You MUST NOT use petroleum based lubricants for the EPDM rubber seals. Use silicone or Teflon based lubricants only. Your DOT 5 brake fluid actually works well here as it is silicone oil.

    Slantback hatch gasket question.

    Did you lubricate it?

RockAuto has them. https://www.rockauto.com/en/catalog/chevrolet,2001,express+3500,6.5l+v8+diesel+turbocharged,1371383,engine,rocker+arm+retainer,10316 Half price of everybody else. Real GM part.

1984 cucv Engine oil type 6.2l diesel

If you're going to run a 10w30 oil it needs to be an API C oil, not API F. For example, Chevron Delo 400 SDE is ok. Chevron Delo 400 ZFA is not ok.

    Center mount Turbo M1008

Anything you want. I had to cut right up to the rivet nuts for the glow plug ballast resistor. I have not renwed the body mounts yet. I went this route with the intention of adding air conditioning in the future. You're going to have to build a small doghouse to clear the exhaust but the gas...

Glow plug lost through combustion chamber cup

The only. Serious problem I see on these engines is the fire ring of the head gasket wears into the top deck of the engine block. I put Cometic gaskets in my engine but they require a specific surface finish. I'm not a big fan of Cometic products, either.
