External tank / aux pickup for 2" NPT?

Use a bushing or 3 to get you to a NPT size that has a -5 AN adapter available.

8V92 Coughs but Won't Start (SOLVED!)

The unit injector Detroit Diesel engines are very good at self priming. I might be known for installing empty filters on an engine, starting it, letting it run to 1200 rpm, let the air bubble hit, and use the inertia of the generator set keep it going until the filters prime.

RustOleum Rusty Metal Primer (the red version)

The hot products today are low viscosity, penetrating epoxy primers. International Pre-Prime 167 is an example but all of the big manufacturers have their own version. These are a pain to work with, they run everywhere and the recoat windows are narrow but they do work very well for marginally...

8V92 Coughs but Won't Start (SOLVED!)

The block heater will certainly make it easier to start. I would do the plate style, get the heat where it needs to be in the head. There are also silicone heater pads that you can stick to the oil pan. It won't help with starting much because the oil is so far from the block but it will help...

    M1008 Build

I agree. Flood the block at a minimum.

8V92 Coughs but Won't Start (SOLVED!)

The weakness of the 71 series are the dry fit liners. They frett and wear out the block. If you let this progress too long the block has to be bored for oversized liners which kills the ability to in-frame the engine.

Best gen set for home backup.

The tires don't hold up well at all. Nothing else deteriorates with time.

    Db2 injector pump electrical connectors

Nobody is being helpful and I won't be either. The CUCV models use Packard connectors but the HMMWV does appear different from your picture.

Best gen set for home backup.

Small generator sets typically have speed droop type governors. This means your power frequency may vary from 60-63 Hz. This is going to piss off your UPS power supplies unless you have industrial units. Generators with isochronous governors can maintain 60hz but are rare on small gen sets...

8V92 Coughs but Won't Start (SOLVED!)

There is too much folklore around the Detroit engines. People think they'll run forever without maintenance but the truth is that they'll run until they die catastrophically. With our experience the 71 series generator sets got a major overhaul interval of 24k hours. The John Deere engines get...

8V92 Coughs but Won't Start (SOLVED!)

Ether is mandatory to start Detroit 2-strokes in cold weather. They don't have glow plugs or grid heaters. Go ahead, do your worst. Detroits have unit injectors and are fed by a voluminous gear pump. They self prime quite well.

8V92 Coughs but Won't Start (SOLVED!)

The engines had a fixed fuel rack so if you got a stuck injector because of water in the fuel the governor couldn't bring the injectors back to the shutdown position. The remaining injectors would be stuck at that power setting. If you removed the load or declutched the engine would overspeed...

Best gen set for home backup.

I wouldn't say the smaller sets inherently use less fuel. I recently downgraded the generator sets in my fleet from 8.1 liter John Deere engines to 4.5 liter JD units. The capital cost was the primary driver behind the decision. Our sets spend most of their lives running at 10kW so the 150+kW...

8V92 Coughs but Won't Start (SOLVED!)

The shutdown air damper does not close during a normal shutdown. It's usually connected to an overspeed trip or emergency shutdown.

8V92 Coughs but Won't Start (SOLVED!)

White smoke like that means the engine is fueling. IF you have a shutdown damper it's in the blower inlet duct. You can see the shaft in this picture from eBay This link has the rest of the pictures that show the shaft, damper flap, and catch mechanism...

Rebuilding after 15 years of storage

It's an endemic problem to the 1973-1980 trucks. http://justacarguy.blogspot.com/2021/09/i-hadnt-heard-about-c10-hood-problem.html?m=1

8V92 Coughs but Won't Start (SOLVED!)

I always built my 71 series engines with spring return racks which let me eliminate the shutdown air damper. Saved me many midnight phone calls.

8V92 Coughs but Won't Start (SOLVED!)

I ask about the smoke because that means it's getting fuel. Without smoke I would be looking at the shutdown solenoid. Anyways, a Detroit that won't run on starting fluid? Maybe NDT is on to something with the blower drive shaft. NDT, have you heard of this happening? I used to run a lot of 71...

Broken bolt of my CUCV M1009 please help identify where it came from!

It's an easy fix. This is one of the situations where an EZ Out is supposed to be used. Drill a hole in the middle of the bolt and use the EZ Out to unscrew the remains. As for a starter, if you can get your hands on a real Delco-Remy 28MT, new or reman by a trusted supplier, that would be your...

8V92 Coughs but Won't Start (SOLVED!)

The batteries sound a bit weak. What voltage is it maintaining while cranking? Any white smoke?
