Has anyone done an in-frame 3116 rebuild?

Yes, basically re-honing the rings, not that old of a trick, or I am not as young as I still think I am:) Probably why I keep injuring myself... The issue here without records, or hour meters on these surplus vehicles, usage is an unknown... lots of tools for evaluation, but that wasn't the...

Has anyone done an in-frame 3116 rebuild?

Yea, but a leak-down on a 3116 seems a little more difficult without some cat SST made out of unobtanium, to separate the injection port from the fuel gallery...:) In the end, the blow-by indicates something is worn. Are you going to go to the trouble of stripping down the top end to replace...

Has anyone done an in-frame 3116 rebuild?

Yep more than one way to set the top end... You might have to pull the rad and intercooler if you had to pull the cam, but you should be able to hone and re-ring provided you don't find anything out of spec.

M1089 FMTV wrecker - hydraulic problem - PTO engadges but no hydraulic function

yea, Im sorry, I am not going to be much help with codes. Got any nearby army or guard units who run these? A phone call into the motor pool and an explanation of your situation(they are selling the trucks, but haven't released the tech pubs yet), might lead to someone taking pity on you and...

M1089 FMTV wrecker - hydraulic problem - PTO engadges but no hydraulic function

Was wondering about that when I looked at the drawing. If built like that, thats a really bad design. There should be no way to deadhead a pump, accidentally or otherwise. Dead-headed hydraulics blow lines, fracture pumps and sometimes damage drive systems/gears...

M1089 FMTV wrecker - hydraulic problem - PTO engadges but no hydraulic function

Me too maybe, Coffey only gave me an A0 hydraulic schematic:) In the end hydraulics are hydraulics and the system may not have changed all that much from A0 to A1. Do you have any pics of the hydraulic control panels? That will show how different they possibly are... when you say nothing...

M1089 FMTV wrecker - hydraulic problem - PTO engadges but no hydraulic function

Year? AO or A1? Does the truck have a self recovery winch?

    Anyone a hydraulic genius

Yea, could also be a bad ram seal, but the selector not cleanly separating the two operations I think may be a big clue... Duh, I have had a similar issue on a different type system. Have you tried loading up both systems simultaneously? IE: Try and lift the front of the LMTV that you cannot...

    M1078 Air/Hydraulic Pump Electric Replacement

I did some math a while back. The 34-2 manual says the cab minus windshield, rear windows and inst & fuse panels, steering column and steps/fenders weighs 1400 pounds. With those items installed I am estimating a complete stock cab weight around 1600#? Based on the lift/balance point shown...

    Anyone a hydraulic genius

Are the control valves rotary(valve core rotates) or push/pull(core slides in or out) spool type? Push pull spool type usually have o-rings at the ends and close tolerances inside, so they always work, but can leak at the ends. Rotary type often have o-rings dividing the halves of the valves...

    M1078 Air/Hydraulic Pump Electric Replacement

The safety checks are shown on the schematic diagrams for the cab and tire crane cylinders. One of the things that help mitigate excessive flow are the small hoses, fittings and the valve block itself which has restricted orifices on crane and cab circuits. I have heard of some replacing with...

    M1078 Air/Hydraulic Pump Electric Replacement

Sorry, you are loosing me... My AOP reservoir is 10” X 5” X 4” or 200 cu/in. If a part of it wasn't filled with pump, it could only hold 0.86 gallon total... All 4 cylinders hold .54 gal when fully extended. When fully retracted the rod takes up 0.14 gal so the total volume for all 4...

    M1078 Starter Replacement

Yes its heavy. An assistant or an engine hoist holding a lift strap to support it while you unbolt and then carry most of the weight as you lower it. I would pull it apart and clean and inspect it...

CAT 3116 A/C pully not really needed? LMTV FMTV

Yea, it was interesting and he said he learned a lot from it. Perhaps if it was done off of the transmission PTO or some other standalone hydraulic pump, but I think there is too much risk/liability mixing it with the steering.

CAT 3116 A/C pully not really needed? LMTV FMTV

He blew up his steering box, literally... Split the case from top to bottom due to excessive hydraulic pressure... He got it working eventually, but I would pose the question, while driving 10 tons of minivan killing death on a stick down the highway, do you really want to add potential...
