Next time I start considering buying an oddball vehicle will someone take me out and beat some sense into me?
Anyone buy an oil pan gasket for one of these yet? All the photos for DD 3-53s I can find online have different hole configurations. The ones I've come across so far have #1 4 holes...
That's on the one in the Goat now. I'll probably swap it out for this one if this engine proves to be good but for now I just want it to hold oil to check the motor. I've also ordered a spin-on oil filter kit.
Got started on the new motor chores by pulling the oil pan off of it. Why someone would punch a hole in the pan versus simply unbolting the drain plug has always baffled me. I'm thinking it took a whole lot more effort to do it wrong than it would have to do it right but we always seemed to do...
The problem is a short run might not verify if there is a problem and I don't want an overheat issue since that got me in this mess to begin with. If the engine is good I'd need to pull the radiator to swap it over any way so might as well hook it all up and let it idle for a bit.
For the time being I'm going to concentrate and setting something up to try running the new motor. I can pull the oil pan off of it and Keith_J will weld it up for me so we don't have to worry about it leaking. I will have to pull the radiator but can do it while the old motor is still in the tub.
Thanks! Looks like that'd work fine. Question is, how hard would it be to get on/off my nice/big trailer? I suppose that'd give me an excuse to deliver your AC unit.
The Wife Unit said not to dignify Warthogs suggestion with a comment
The problem is getting the oil pan off the currently installed engine. If I leave the Goat on the trailer to take it to a friend to pull then I'm stuck with the Goat on the trailer until I get a new engine installed. If I take the Goat off the trailer and pull the engine in the driveway I have...
Made it back. We left Wed 9/30 around 1200 and got back Fri 10/2 around 1800. 2075 miles with 122.3 gallons of diesel used averaging 17mpg. When I checked the motor in Cheyenne there was no water at the pump outlet and only some residual oil on the dipstick. When we pulled in tonight there...
Thanks Jim! That was solid advice on the tollroad around Denver. Probably saved us an hour. We're about an hour from NM now (2000hrs MT time) headed into NM.
Getting ready to pass through Amarillo. Luckily I was out of cell coverage when the SEE sold so couldn't go over my max of $15,500. It sold for $17k and I might have been tempted. Would have come in handy pulling the Goat engine.
There are several in Amarillo, then none between there and Colorado Springs but between CS and Fort Collins we'll be covered. We should be able to hit 1 or 2 if TexAndy can handle it.
See post #655. I wouldn't let him touch it since he wouldn't give me any indication what he would charge just to tear it down. If I left it, he did the tear down, wanted some ridiculous amount then not only would I be stuck with a vehicle I couldn't drive back on a trailer and have to pay a...
If you run across another one of the blackout light guards I need one. I've got one off of a 151 (3 bolt) at the moment that is good from a distance but is obviously incorrect once you get close.
