I know this might sound odd but for the 802 I use a pair of lawn mower batteries. They are cost effective and work great. To keep from cutting the factory cables I just buy 3 pre-made battery cables and replace the factory cables. Going this route a set of batteries and cables are about $80.

I think we are back to a broken wire or loose terminal somewhere. Shorting across the timer won't help. It will just short out that circuit. Not exactly a problem since there is no power there.
