Got a call from a MV buddy of mine, said that his employer at Lowe's Home Improvement in Winchester, VA is having a "Contractor Appreciation Day" on Friday, April 27th 2012. This is a new event, and looks like all sorts of people, and hobbies are going to be displayed out in the parking lot...

    SS military radio manual section?

Do you think it might behoove us to get a section in the manuals part of the SS website for us to post radio manuals? There are a lot of us who have vehicles with working (or non-working) radio sets installed, I for one feel the addition of such a section would help out many SSers on here...

going to Coleman's on Tuesday 1/10

Going there with a friend on Tuesday. I'm gonna take pictures, of course. If anyone needs me to look for anything, or pick something up that they have paid for previously, I'd be happy to hold it until you get it from me, or I can bring to Aberdeen or another rally. PM me if you have any...

m199 converter dolly - any survive?

I have seen the relatively common M198 and M198A1 converter dollies, used to haul a semi-trailer behind a truck with the pintle hitch. However, David Doyle's book shows a two-axle converter dolly called the M199, uses 14.00x20 tires and rated for 18 tons. Do any of these survive? I've never...

military spring antenna base for 2-meter operation

The most common mil-type spring bases are the MX-6707 for the VRC-12 series of radios, and the AS-3900 type for the SINCGARS series of radios. They are very rugged, the down side is they are for operation only between 30 and 75 MHz, approximately. What mil-type spring antenna base should I...

    road trip with joediveguy

Went to Leon's Auto Parts south of Culpeper VA on Monday. If any of you know the central VA area, Leon's is a haven for old iron, he has PLENTY of 1950s and 1960s cars in the back, maybe thousands of them. Some are good, some are rust buckets. He has a lot of newer stuff as well, he rarely...

    M1009 towing a M1101/1102 trailer?

Saw the emergence of the HMMWV issue M1101/1102 trailers that are starting to come out now. Would you think that a CUCV M1009 would have the means to tow one around? Now loaded up to the max, mind you, but perhaps as a towed camping trailer or with a light load?

    A04-53 engine for early mule

A buddy of mine called and said he got a 4-cylinder mechanical mule engine in trade, wants me to get rid of it. I think I'll pick it up off him and try and sell it myself in the classifieds. Anyways, judging from what he has told me, it's a A04-53 4-cylinder gas engine. I have never seen an...

    removing the steering wheel

Is there a trick to removing the M37's steering wheel? I took the nut off, pulled and beat on it with a hammer until I was blue in the face, nothing. Went to Advance Auto Parts and borrowed a steering wheel puller, but it looks more like a collection of bolts than anything. Looking at the...

    M880 rear axle selection

M880 axle selection Planning on future builds, getting my mental ducks in a row (hard to do, since most of those ducks are suffering massive hangovers at any one time). Plan to build a quasi-M880 truck, on a more modern frame. Engine would be a 6BT Cummins. The stocks axles on the M880...

Have a gent interested in getting my last FMTV rim, he owns a 818 tractor and needs a spare wheel. He swears he helped a guy at the SS mini rally change his rim, he has a 5-ton tractor 818 series and the rims look almost identical.

    military replacements for M871/872 flatbeds?

The military is getting rid of the older-line M871 and M872 flatbed trailers, the 3-axles jobbies, that were issued 30 years ago. Once in a while an older Cold War-era M127 stake trailer comes up that the 871s replaced, but for the most part these older flatbed haulers are all going away...
