You obviously never towed... My 18 "cummins" Is everything but a speed machine. Sure it has numbers, but my wife's Volvo can smoke it at every road condition empty...
I'll suggest you keep the cheb with the 4.8, or 5.3. Will be faster then any humvee. More comfortable...
Do yourself a favor and read the tm's. That will anwser most of your questions.
Have you done any pmcs on the truck since you bought it? Check the fluids, check the lock nuts on the hubs.
For parts there's Kascar, and some others you can find with a simple Google search.
to a certain extent. mil trucks are maintained to a standard and often times a standard that is excelled when PMCS is done by someone with 2 brain cells to rub together... when they break they got fixed (subject to parts availability). Nothing more then fleet maintained vehicles.

find a local heavy diesel shop to rebuild it... shouldn't cost a third of the going price for a new one.
I wouldn't advice rebuilding them yourself. they require some special tools.

1200 egt's no wonder the size of that intercooler. Small turbocharger too.
At that point I wonder if it's best to meth injection. That's a lot of money and a project just to melt your engine imho. Also those are 4 speed trucks they tested. I don't see how adding a turbo can change the gearing...
