All the battery's do on a diesel is start the truck. You don't need them nessacarily when the truck is running. My m813 you could rip every wire out of the truck and pull start it and it would run the same. It is also mechanical I'm not 100 on the m900 series truck
But another thing you might want to check for it not going over 3rd is to verify that it is NOT stuck in 6 wheel drive. If you do mainly highway driving I would remove the front drive shaft
The PCB are about 150$ aposed to a 500$ starter. But if you wanted to be reckless and try to jump your start I would do it at the starter relay but not very safe and you could melt down your starter and relay and maybe get one heck of a zap
