This is a very good opportunity to mention that the information associated with a CDL is very helpful for anyone working with air brakes. Whether or not you go through with the process of getting one, going through the preparatory learnings for a CDL will teach you the difference about...
At least with the A2, you need the switch on to start, but then you can flip it off while pressure builds. I'm not sure if the a3 uses any sort of fuel solenoid or if the engine needs 24v+ to run.
If the sound of the buzzer is too much, why don't you guys just switch the "off-on" switch to "off" while the truck is warming up and building pressure? You'll have to switch it back to ON to get functional indicators and headlights, and since those are noticeable when they're not working, even...
Great question. I think a bobbed 900 series truck would be great. There are pros and cons for each option. In my case, a big pro was that all of the constituent parts to my build were fairly well available, and very economical.
Sorry for the non-clarity of my original post.
I built this truck:
With these axles, originally sourced from an M54/M8xx series 5-ton truck:
These axles were retrofitted with Meritor 16.5" brakes, fitted to both rear axles (no front brakes). I kept one rear axle as-is, and used it as the...
They're already on my hybrid truck, just with the "flat plate" side of the hemtt wheels facing out, and the hubs flipped in. The rear track width is about 11 inches narrower than the front. It runs down the road ok, but I'd like it to be the same width for stability issues.
I'll see if I can...
As much as I don't want to do that for aesthetics, it may just be the easiest and cheapest option.
Sigh. What I am prepared to contemplate to keep things "looking good".
Best,
Bob
My truck has the hubs flipped in on the rear, but it would be very difficult to move those hubs out, as the drums engage the lugs.
First question - does anyone make wheel spacers for 10 lugs Semi wheels? I need 5.75" long spacers. This would allow me to either space out the wheel from the...
Lol. Is this the "middle" splined sleeve, with the "fine" splines on the inside, and the 8 or so tabs on the outside? If so, that's the part I'm having made.
I guess it might be good to mention that I'm having a local machine shop, here in Boulder, duplicate some parts for a broken 5 ton AVM hub I bought off ebay. I don't know how this fact plays into the current discussion, but this might be helpful to know.
Sure. Here are pics snapped today of this mod. Bear in mind that this was originally performed on this cab to mate up with a telescoping shaft, which went around the wide block of a Cat 3208, to an outboard steering setup.
It now works to mate up to the steering setup that's on my truck, also...
Meeting in 5, so this must be quick.
On my deuce, I cut the stock column and shaft at the firewall. Welded two 90* opposed straps to the OD of the column for support in 2 axes, and bolted those to the firewall.
Found a 1100 series PTO yoke that filled the space perfectly between OD of shaft...

Edit: I was under the mistaken thought that the 1545P tranny in the A3 is a 1000 series tranny. It's actually part of the AT series of Allisons, and the flavors in the A3 are the AT545 as well as the AT1545...
This whole thread could potentially hinge on the question of whether you want to keep the tranny as an Automatic, or if you want to add a pedal and go to a Manual option. Any preference?
Wife and I just watched "Super 8". Overall, they nailed the period-specific vehicles for a movie set in 1979, but I did catch a deuce in A3 trim in there.
I might be the only one who both a) saw that movie and b) knows military vehicles, but I figured I'd ask the group. :)
Best,
Bob
