I don't think its a check valve problem. Like some have already said...you are sucking air or there is no fuel being sucked from inside the tank.
My water pump has a small leak and started making a noise when you first start the truck up. Looks like it was one of those cheapo pumps that they sent me.

Check your ground wire from the top left rear of the engine to the terminal block(-) If its loose or missing it will cause the small neg wire on the front battery to over-heat when starting.
