HMTT using Behr paint
I have mentioned that we used Behr Paint in other threads on Steel Soldiers, but it seemed very applicable so I thought I would put in my 2 cents worth on here.
First off, I consider myself a novice painter at best. I am more comfortable with a brush or roller than a...
5-Ton HMTT Prototype
Thought I would add some pictures of the 5-Ton HMTT Prototype (Built at TACOM around 1976-78). We finally got some of the mechanical and quite a bit of the exterior restoration completed for a show this past summer. She runs a Detroit 6V53T and Allison box with a custom New...
Looks awesome gang! I went many many years ago and would love to be able to make it next year. This weekend I had (2) family wedding events - no way around it. Looks like it was a lot of fun.
Agreed, Ron.
While I was at the parts counter, I just handed the sales rep. the spare that was in my cab with a buggered thread and he came back with the self locking nuts. I wasn't sure if it was original, but on a driveline component spinning at some serious RPMs, I didn't think it was a...
To start the ball rolling.......I finally got a chance to get to a real fasteners supplier to get some additional "drive flange" bolts. These are the ones (8 total) that hold together the two round mating flanges for the rear driveshaft between the MK48 Front Power Unit and whatever Rear Body...
Thought it might be time to start a thread to possibly "group together" any helpful information and parts availability for these trucks due to their uniqueness.
I had depot mix up about 10 gals of the base green off of the federal codes for the HMTT Prototype. All done by remote control as my wife had to pick it up for me since I was still buried with work and time was running out before the TACOM show - was I nervous! Looked good at the shop and, as...
Shure would have, Ron - but my plate is pretty darn full now with insane work and all. But, you never really know what might cross your path in the future! Just trying to be thankful for the cool toys in the barn that I have (and looking forward to having some time to play with them!).
Dave.
Hey Guys,
Yup - it is the same basic chassis as yours, Bjorn. They did lift the suspension about 1.5 to 2 inches. It is taller than it states in the "Wheeled Military Vehicles" book - since the entry in the book, the smaller HIAB crane (a 350?) was swapped out for a HIAB 650. This basically...
Thanks, guys. She really did turn out pretty good.
Yes, that is the original 8,000 lb hydraulic recovery winch that is side mounted between #2 and #3 axles on the passenger side. You might just be able to make out the silverish data plate rivetted to the passenger dropside over the winch for...
More Show
Sadly, the show had to end sometime and it was time to load her up and get her back home. Was kind of appropriate - a Kenworth hauling a Kenworth - very cool! The TACOM folks were awesome and asked me to present a T-shirt made for the show to the truck driver (who volunteered his...
Show Pictures
Some pictures of her as done as she was going to get (nothings as perfect as you want it to be). Cought my bestest wife ever, Mary, taking a well deserved rest under the canopy. The show was great with a lot of very cool folks. Mary put together the "story board" (very cool). We...
More pictures
Back outside for some taping and sealer/primer. Then the grand experiment with the Behr Latex Flat Paint. To be honest, it looked a dead ringer for the Stryker that was parked next to it at the show! Sadly, no more pictures of the reassembly as the clock was moving way too fast...
More pictures
Brought it into the "truck barn" for some after hours work. Couple of my good friends helping me out (more like saving me from myself!). Quite a few of my friends are Hot Rod and Classic Car guys. We have known each other long enough that they don't let me any closer to paint...
Just thought I would finally get to posting the pictures that I have of the final restoration "push" that we did on the 5-Ton HMTT (High Mobility Tactical Truck) Prototype and of it at the TACOM/Veterans Weekend Show right after. I wish I had taken more, but with work and all, getting it all...
Thanks Wreckerman,
You guys have been really great at spelling out to the rest of us the logistics necessary to pull off one or more of these recoveries with success (or at least minimizing the agravation). Great Job on the organizing and researching.
Dave
Honestly, with Wreckerman's experience, especially of late - just hire Wreckerman if you win a truck. Chances are pretty good that his services will be requested by enough people to make the trip worth his investment in time, etc. I am having him help me with mine and he is extremely...
My Single Pick-Up can not be until next Tuesday. All is confirmed and scheduled, but Wreckerman says he will have to see if there are enough takers for his services to warrant his making a trip back next week. Anybody who is thinking of using his services - it sure seems like a heck of a deal...
