That is a civilian Power Wagon. They have been used the world over for industrial, logging, drilling, and other work-related applications. Very cool find. It may not look like much, but restored those bring GOOD money. I'd definitely try and save it by swapping an electric hoist. Then cut...

Here ya go, only one I found.

The rear hatch is to provide ease of loading, as opposed to lifting heavy ammo crates high up on your shoulder to load in a deuce bed or M105 cargo trailer. They are great for hauling bricks, rocks, landscaping dirt, etc.

They are so small because ammo is much denser than most normal cargo. If you have a HUGE trailer meant to carry ammo, it will get too heavy for the deuce to easily tow over rough ground. They were mostly used for artillery ammunition, this explains why there is a separate fuze box just forward...

Perhaps it may have been a part of the construction of the Al-Can highway? Or maybe used by our forces along the DEW Line during the early Cold War? Hard to say how it got up there, but glad you saved it....
