Well if you can figure out which way it was pointed......
What I did when I lifted a civvy truck that had it, was make a bracket to bolt to the rear end, that raised the valve by the amount of the lift. Therefore putting the valve in the same relative position to the body/frame.
you might find you can get the cable out, if you remove the rear plate as well.

For 1 man winch operations... I have heavily considered buying the $100 wal-mart backup camera setup.... Just need to come up with 12v up front to power the camera, and 12v inside to power the screen.
My other thought was a big heavy magnet on a truck mirror... so you could see the winch...
I have a tranny too, out of a gas engine truck. I rebuilt it probably 10 years ago, and it hasnt been in a truck in 3.
Someplace I have a Haynes manual on rebuilding them too.
