Serp, for painting the wood, brushing it on works very well too. You can work it into the wood and a reducer is not needed. I use the gillespie primer on wood also.
A hardener works well too. I use PPG Starthane catalyst, Star 1000 with excellent results.
David, when the Army authorized the use of self adhesive numbers/letters/stars, seems like I read where the vehicle had to be marked in one or the other, paint or decal, and not a combination of both. Is that true?
I don't know.... usually the distance between the top of the tire and the wheel well opening is less in the back than in the front. The front may have a very little bit of sag to it, in fact it probably does with 20 yrs on it. You may be able to have a spring shop re arc them for you.

Because they all use the same 'B' blank key, that is why chains are installed so the steering wheel can be locked.
