Keep finding missing parts here, having looked at the diagram of the fuel system a couple of days ago, it didn't occur to me that the final fuel filter wasn't shown. It isn't on my engine either, somebody removed the canister and bypassed it completely (not to mention the fact that there was no...
Mike, the fuel tanks that are on it now are not originals and don't fit too well on the hangers they are from m52 5-ton type trucks. The original tanks are made of aluminum, so I'm still looking. Will probably fabricate a heavy duty tool box in time.
D-man, got one of the solenoids on order...
Thanks Lance, I didn't see anything like it when I was there either, but appreciate you thinking of it.
There are always little things, like rear composite lights made of aluminum for example, mine are plastic and cracked.
A big tool box instead of the passenger side fuel tank would be good too. :-)
The M656 series 5-ton trucks may be few and far between, but it is interesting to note some of the design features of these vehicles. They were designed to mil spec from the ground up.
I'll list features as I go along and "discover" them on the XM757.
Here is one such feature, there is a...
Steering effort will be drastically reduced with single rear tires, the turning radius will also be reduced. To reduce the steering effort even further free up the rear axles. By doing both, I measured a reduction of almost 10 feet on the turning circle (curb-curb) on my deuce. The test was done...
Here are a couple of shots of mine. I used the personnel heater duct hose and kept it on the truck for a couple of years without a problem. The crankcase breather runs up through the support stand.
Not by the book, but it works. :-)
Good work Patrick! I'll be looking closer at it for sure, my problem with CB in the the deuce has been the high background noise. By using the current headset, H-161, the experiments can continue...
The M35 is actually a lot lighter than the replacement 2-axle M1078A1.
The FMTV M1078A1 has a curb weight of 17,589 lb vs the M35 with its 12,465 lb.
My XM757 8x8 weighs less than the "new deuce".
Thanks for looking Dman! I'm thinking that the hole in the IP must be covered somehow and it seem like the solenoid is the only option since the lever is different and sticks out further on this IP. Tried taking a picture, but it's dark and the IP is not accessible directly from the side.
If you...
It was a busy week, here are several images.
Charley and Edna are standing in front of a cargo chute being pulled from the ground, it was grass covered..
Image #2 shows the burned out trailer, which had been loaded with aircraft tires and the shop (far left). The conex box survived pretty much...
Very little left when I departed a couple of weeks ago.
Kenny, about the engines, Charley had told the scrapper not to take any of them, he had dozens in cans, some detroit diesel all in good condition. Well Charley was gone for a week and when he came back all the engines had been hauled away...
James (M1075), I want to thank you for posting the pictures and starting this thread. It was a great experience working with Charley Bell and helping to clean up the remains after that fire.
It also landed me a truly great MV, the XM757. Charley's brother, Gary has difficulties coping with the...
The fuel cut-off solenoid is missing on my engine. The cut-off lever can be and must have been operated manully previously, but it leaves the timing gear access opening uncovered (as it is now).
If anybody has one of these. please let me know.
Thanks.
Hmmm...I was right the first time, there was no filter element in the canister. aua
(13:45) Turned the engine over with the starter and it sounded real good. Not ready to start it yet, got to fix the fuel lines/filters.
Correction on the filter bypass statement in the previous post. It only looked that way, the fuel filters are different on this engine compared to the ldt models. There is only a primary, which was indeed bypassed and a secondary, which looks like the image shows below. The power steering fluid...
In order to gain better access to the engine IP and fuel lines, I removed the left front tire. This exposed the massive steering gear. Pictures here. It seems like the thick layers of mud act like a preservative, the surface below is without rust and the original paint shows up everywhere...
Checked on it some time ago and found no real problem, but you will need a 60 amp alternator to handle to additional power needed.
Good to see you back! Understand you purchased Jim's deuce. Keep us posted....
