That is one thing for sure, the steering wheel/seat height/leg room is perfect for me. I am about as comfortable in my M1008 as anything I ever drove. Another part for me is that smooth diesel engine and I love the way it sounds and goes about working. No powerhouse like a Cummins, but she sure...
In 1982 I was living just south of a small Kansas town, Culver. I woke up to the sound of a diesel engine screaming and a alternatively a turbo spooling down... My neighbor had managed to bury a four wheel drive articulated John Deere at the end of my driveway. He was a heart patient, I spent...
Thanks for your service, I just picked up a M1009 in Utah and it should be zinging by Denver towards the end of January. I am 440 east of Denver. Should you by some stroke of luck find yourself at Ft. Riley, drop me a line and I will be glad to come take you for a ride, heck, you can drive and...
We made a 200 or so mile run through the Flint Hills today. I was hoping for some good snow photos, but it all blew to the creeks, ditches and hedgerows. I stopped by the grocery store on the way home and when I came out, Sir was in the driver's seat. Even he knows a good thing when he sees it...
M1009 can probably run 80 all day long, the engine will last longer and get much better fuel mileage a little slower. In good condition though, 80 should not be beyond the engine's rpm range. 70 is fast enough for me, but I am an old man....
RPM is hard on diesels....
M1009 on 31" tires is 2337 at 70; 2671 at 80
M1008 on 32" tires is 3460 at 70; 3954 at 80
I always maintained that my M1008 got the best combination of fuel milage and speed at 48ish..
M1008 on 32" tires at 48 is 2298, when I felt like I was hammering on my...
What is it about these trucks that draw so many people to them? I know I would rather drive mine on trips under 200 miles than most vehicles. Even though it is loud and slow, lacks the comfort niceties, I really enjoy driving it. I often would take it over my Cummins Quadcab. Until I found this...
Looks down on the chassis, left front tire looks like it had been spinning, right rear tire is air born, that one is stuck... Time for help!! I agree, that is one sweet looking M715! I know at times, I sure miss mine. Wish I could go back and let that young man drive it more than I did. He is...
I run my M1008 right at 50 most of the time on the road. It will run 65, but it is howling. My previous M1008 was better on fuel than this one is by four or five miles per gallon. You paid a heavy penalty in fuel milage running over 50. I try to drive 48 with them, but that is hard even for an...
I had my needle there yesterday, but my ground speed by gps was 72. Mine goe down the road great, just do not need to get any added attention from the red and blue lights.
Along that line, if you find a good shop, ask him to show you some of the cobbled up crap that comes from those mass rebuilders. They are out to make money and volume is the key to their business. If it saves them a nickel on 50,000 units and will get them past the warranty period, it is going...
Mine has close to new tires, Wranglers on it. It must be just a little wider than a standard pickup as it jumps in and out of the ruts all the time. I wound up cross wise in the road a couple of times, good old Kansas black slick. I piled about an inch of it on the left front corner of the hood...
Mine read 85 today, but my gps said 72. Mine seems to cruise along at 70 (gps) pretty easily, ground speed anyway. I found out today that it is not nearly as nice in the mud as my M1008 is. It moves good, but it sure dances around a lot.

The 1.25 ton pickups would be the M1008 and the M1028, they are geared at 4.56 and will run extended highway time, at under 60 mph. You are colder than we are. My M1008 starts down to -10 without being plugged in.
The M1009 has the 3.08 gear ratio and is a Blazer.
The 6.2 is pretty rpm...
It could be a lot of things, but check that fuel drain tube coming out of the bottom of the filter block. It should be tight. That is what was wrong with mine. It was that way when I picked it up. Our conditions sound the same. If it is leaking out of the line at the top left of the fuel block...
My M1009 fired right off this morning, just like it should. Hopefully the seeping drain line fixed it. Time will tell, sure wish they had a nice solid spin on filter like an early Cummins! At least the start and die routine did not bite me this morning. Glen
Next time around, have somebody hop in and while they are trying the key in the start position, give the starter a rap with a hammer. Not a crushing blow, just a good solid love tap. You want to stike it as close to the aluminum bell as possible, but not on the bell itself. Many times the...
