Yep, this is called 'tailgating' . If you look back through pictures of Vietnam. You will see a picture of almost the exact same thing happening on a mountaintop firebase.

R442 is the auxillary receiver (basically a receive only radio) for the old 12 series radios. May want to look up the R442 or also check under AN/VRC-47 and/or other 12 series setups.

Good point. I had the master cylinder blow on a 1009 once while on a slight decline at 40mph. Nowhere to go except into the rear of the civilian vehicle in front of me. I think they are still settling that one.
