That sludge is most likely from leaking axle shaft seals allowing oil to mix with grease and some water(from a bad boot). You did change your axle shaft seal while you were there, right? Also, that improvised jack stand looks unsafe to me.

Do you already have a thread about your bakes? If so, add to it, do not make an additional thread. That line loos like your master cyl vent line. If so, it should go into the MC cap. It's connected to the air pack and possibly your fuel tank. If air is coming out of it, your air pack is bad.

Either style air pack can be rebuilt. Depending on your budget and experiance and time/equipment, your choice to replace or rebuild. The master cyl is a breeze to clean and rebuild.

You are better off charging each battery separately.

There should not be any grease in the air pack. You need to rebuild it or replace it. And rebuild your master cylinder while your at it.
