    Loud bang while reversing

Also...parking brake. If the moustache spring has gone AWOL the shoes can hang up in reverse and look ok going forward. Sent from my SM-G950W using Tapatalk

What did you do to your deuce this week?

Dutch, I was thinking about it and I realized that the mounting points for the moustache spring are on the inner and outer shoes themselves, so either you have the kind of parking brake shoes that accept them or you don't. It's not something to worry about in any case.

What did you do to your deuce this week?

I’m good now. The newer setup is a direct swap. I just had to get the cable nut off. Not a lot of room up there.

What did you do to your deuce this week?

I decided to crawl under Brutus. Wasn't going to let a little ice stop me. This is the moustache spring. It's purpose is to hold the inner shoe away from the drum when the parking brake is released. You may be able to retrofit one if your truck has the provision for the right side (of the...

What did you do to your deuce this week?

You know on second thought my truck might have the moustache springs installed. I'll try and go out there and look tomorrow. My truck is currently parked on a big patch of ice in my driveway. From the picture your brake assembly looks pretty close to mine.

What did you do to your deuce this week?

I replaced the parking brake shoe assembly already. I didn’t have a return spring at all but I found one that I made work. Better than nothing was my thought. The original style didn’t have the mustache spring but the replacement assembly did. It wasn’t that it was missing, it wasn’t designed...

What did you do to your deuce this week?

Recovry you could be right. I don't remember a moustache spring on my truck, but it could just be my old age addled brain/memory.

What did you do to your deuce this week?

I think that is where the moustache spring comes into play. It pushes the shoes just far enough apart that they don't drag.

M35A2 goes "clunk clunk clunk" in Reverse

Adjusting clutch pedal free play as per the TM? If it only made a clunking noise when backing up, I would have suspected the parking brake assembly/moustache spring.

    Broken Transfer case?

I have a couple of those “mustache springs” that are NOS. Send me a PM if you want/can’t find one.

    Broken Transfer case?

Good idea. I checked and there is space between drum and pad but "moustache" spring is broken.......anyone got a source for those? Still wonder where gear oil is coming from. Will spray with degreaser to try and locate source..... Thanks for the ideas!

    M35A2 Parking Brake

...install them for only $60, and will be reinstalling them this weekend. One thing I would suggest is to also replace the return and moustache springs while you are there. I started working on mine to replace the cable because it was sticking in the sheath and not engaging the brake shoe, but...

    parking brake return spring issues

...pin. The second shows how it is now connected- I ended up going to Ace hardware and finding a replacement spring and it fit through the hole without the cotter pin and does not fall out. The third shows the moustache spring and the fourth shows the other spring used for adjusting the parking...

Parking Brake: Cable Start Point and Adjuster Bolt Size

...bolt #5 until the outer shoe barely starts dragging, while the brake is fully released. Then adjust (via bending) the length of the moustache spring so that the inner shoe won't drag while released. It takes about 5/8" of cable travel, from fully released-no-drag to fully applied, if...

Parking Brake: Cable Start Point and Adjuster Bolt Size

...by the time I get the jam nut to put a bit of pressure on the lever, the inner shoe wants to contact the drum. I've loosened the moustache spring, tightened it, etc. When it was run down far enough on the cable to hold the truck, the inner shoe was actually putting pressure on the drum when...

    Drove the Deuce...Some questions

...wrenches, have to work by feel, i could not really see mine.. This cured the jingling noise i was getting. I also had a broken "moustache spring" when the park brake assembly is out of adjustment, it slides a micro amount in and out of the drum. the drum edge gradually touches the spring...

    Brake light switch replacement

...contact at thebottom of the inner shoe. At this point, the shoe kind of flopped around. Ajusted it some with the screw on the moustache spring, but still had flop. Additionally, the cable had a nylock on it! Not sure what's up with that. It all seemed to be good once I tightened up the...

    handbrake jamb nut size

...at the top of lever travel. While this is the desirable outcome, the contradictions to the TM are puzzling, to say the least. Anyone have any ideas as to what's up? It almost appears that the brake cable is too long, or perhaps the moustache spring is shot. I'm open to suggestions.
