Several of the trucks in the (civilian) fleet shop I work at have the HT740DR this unit is indeed a 5 speed with 2nd gear start up and low gear 1st on manual selection.

Take the fresh air intake for the cxompressor loose and spay a little wd-40 or equivalent while it's running. Sounds like the unloader valves in the compressor head are stuck. The fresh air pickup is normally tied directly into the intake tube for the engine.aua
Battery compartments on the right fender, have you found your fuel leak I have one out here that also belongs to a fed agency. Just replaced the fuel pods.
Here is a little tidbit for everyone working on a MUTT. Brake shoe return springs part# 80396,
shoe holddown springs part# 80718, and the spring keepers part# 80725......All available thru your local NAPA store. Under their United Brake Parts line. Hope this helps.
Post it for sale with the least amount you will take for it. Remember if you part it out you have to disassemble it. Sounds like a lot of work to me:idea:
