California Title Registration Diesel Smog Law and GL loadout info for M35 Deuce 5 Ton

So the question is, are we going to be getting some kind of notification asking for compliance from the DMV or are we expected to report how we have complied? Most of what I've read is worded in such a way as to address people who use their vehicles for business, not for personal use.

    dana 70 dually on a m1009

the Dana 70 will give you greater ground clearance over a 14 bolt rear end, but parts for them are generally more expensive.

    6bt in CUCV

You know, now that I think about it, that type of OD kit could only be used on a two wheel drive transmission with a divorced transfer case. But fear not, gear vendors makes an OD setup that replaces the back half of your transfer case so you can maintain your factory fourwheel drive ratios and...

    6bt in CUCV

Sounds like that swap would be a great project! Another way around the gearing issue would be to use a gear vendors overdrive unit. Going that route would allow you to maintain the low end power you might need while giving you a selectable overdrive that will keep you cruising down the highway...

Anyone seen a halftrack with an automatic transmission installed?

Not sure if this can be done is this circumstance, but a lot of offroad race trucks are running manual transmissions with torque converters in place of the clutch. Might be something worth looking into. Have fun with the build!

Anybody know where to get lift shackles?

:ditto: If you want to retain the factory load rating a shackle flip would be your best bet, maybe with a block if you want to net more lift. As far as driveshaft angle goes, you can get away with running shims or lift blocks with a built in taper to rotate the axle and change pinion angle. I...

    14 bolt woes

6 bolts should last you for a short drive without any problems as long as you take it easy. If you're worried about oil leaking out you could always remove the rest of the bolts, slide the axle out a little and put some RTV on the mating surface for peace of mind.

Figured you 2.5 ton guys might get a kick.....

That is a pretty rad build man. Are those King shocks I see on there?

So....what do you guys exactly do with these trucks???

I use mine for fun. Plain and simple. I know fun is a very broad answer, but what you can do with these trucks to have fun includes a very wide range of things, as you can see by all the different posts in this thread. So far, I've used my deuce as an RTI ramp (to measure articulation on my...

California Title Registration Diesel Smog Law and GL loadout info for M35 Deuce 5 Ton

Blendmaster, I did a little digging and found a "low mileage" loophole. The cap is 1k miles per year but to be able to retain normal registration might be worth it. http://www.arb.ca.gov/msprog/onrdiesel/documents/faqLowuse.pdf

California Title Registration Diesel Smog Law and GL loadout info for M35 Deuce 5 Ton

Thank you for the clarification. Currently it's registered commercial since I like to drive it somewhat often. My impression was that once you title it as an historic vehicle you are limited on when you can drive it (such as to and from car shows or other events of that nature), I may have...

California Title Registration Diesel Smog Law and GL loadout info for M35 Deuce 5 Ton

So, if I'm reading this right, as of 2015 my 1973 m35a2 will become illegal to operate unless outfitted with a modern engine or registered as historic?

pulling 12v without a batt imbalance

HIDs don't draw that much current, maybe 3-5amps per light. You can use a step down transformer to take your 24 volts and convert it to 12 volts (much like they do on golf carts when they put lights/stereos on them). Another, probably better, option would be to run a standalone 12v system and...

Bent drive shaft. Anybody know the RPM's?

If you're running 9.00s, at 55mph the driveshaft will be turning at 3184-85 rpm

    Bobbed Deuce axle spring perches

If you heat up the cast iron before welding you can get decent welds. I've had to do a couple jobs welding mild steel to cast iron and with a little preheat they came out surprisingly nice.

    California to Kentucky

I'm wondering if anyone is headed from CA to KY or thereabouts. Recently sold some parts to a gentlemen there and turns out shipping is going to be an arm and a leg. I would like to move the parts ASAP. If anybody would be willing to take a couple hundred pounds of truck parts with them on their...
