    Parasitic draw- starter motor

My ‘85 M998 w/6.2 has been experiencing a parasitic draw. Inconvenient but not terribly detrimental yet. The troubleshooting to narrow down the culprit is as follows: -disconnect neg battery terminal of aft battery. -Set multimeter to the 10A setting, making sure the leads are in the appropriate...

    Transmission down shift grind?

So due to some other threads I've been following I've decided to switch over to Pennzoil 75w90 GL-4. Apparently GL-5 oil is bad for standard tranny's because it eats softer metals such as syncros.

    Transmission down shift grind?

    I just use run-of-the-mill 80w90 gear oil.

    Transmission down shift grind?

Mine does as well. A friend of mine who used to rebuild trans says it's probably worn synchromesh. When I gear up I double clutch and it usually gets past the grinding. On the way down sometimes it won't even go into 3rd. At some point I'm just going to bite the bullet and pull the sucker and...

Blinker & high beam indicator issue

Grounds, grounds, grounds. The majority of electrical issues on this truck can be solved by making sure the grounds are clean and in good repair. If the problem persists, use the troubleshooting guide and a multi-meter to isolate the hiccup. When turn signals go afoul it's usually the box or...

    Deep water fording kit question

I have a spare NOS deep ford CDR valve if you need one for your truck.

Anyone added a "Mojave" heater to their Humvee ?

The heaters in these things are very under engineered for sure. You'd think a vehicle that suffers from chronic overheating issues would produce nuclear heat, but it doesn't. I flushed my cooling system out really well and all sorts of junk came out. I pulled the heater core and rigged up a...

    Deep water fording kit question

Common mistake, apparently. The little arrow opposite the handle is the actual position indicator, not the handle itself. The venting ties into the engine via the deep ford CDR valve, and from what I've heard if the system is kept on 'deep ford' for too long you run the risk of blowing seals.

How long the starter will hold?

LoL this is copied/pasted right out of the operator's manual. Dude certainly wasn't doing anyone any favours by possibly burning out a $500 starter just to say it runs. CAUTION If ambient temperature is above 0°F (-18°C), do not operate starter continuously for more than 20 seconds; wait 10...

    1988 M998 Cold Start Problem

The new boxes are overly fragile for their application in a purpose-built military vehicle (IMO), and some say keep using the old clunk box until it dies. Weak batteries and power surges will kill the new ones. Sometimes they just stop working properly for unknown reasons. It's solid state...

Overall height of a 1045a2 with deep ford exhaust

Mine measures 84.5" and will not fit through my garage door. If I take it in for extended maint I just remove the stack. Copper antiseize on the bolts is a wonderful thing.

    3L80 Tranny Leak - Troubleshooting

They can also leak through the O-ring at the modulator.

    What is this?

I found when I converted my tranny to synthetic it started leaking where it didn't before, especially through the modulator O-ring. From what I've heard this is a common occurrence with synthetics.

How NOT to drive a HMMWV.

The Dirt Every Day episode of them rock crawling with a Humvee is far more entertaining. And it has sound.

    Engine dies whilst driving

As a humble servant in one of Her Majesty's loyal colonies I will gladly share a similar experience. The same happened to me once, and it turned out to be the S3 box was the culprit. However, the issue happened only once to kill the truck for good. Something fried inside. In my search I also...

Rear Tail Light Assembly and Bucket

The tail light assy's are standard M-series and used on many types. The buckets are a relatively snug fit and have only two holes in the back for the mounting bolts to pass through. Very simple and unimpressive design, really. Don't forget the steel shunt and ground wire when installing the...

    Moisture in gauges

Both of mine are Faria as well. I don't know for sure how the water got in there, but I'm assuming between the glass and retainer ring from hosing out the inside of the truck.

    Moisture in gauges

So I’ve had some moisture appear in a couple of my gauges for about a month now. I didn’t think much of it till I pulled them out to figure out how to dry them and discovered why they were giving me false readings for the last couple of days. They’ve both corroded inside. I thought these...

M998 rattling noise was not my fan clutch.....dang

There's all sorts of things that can cause noise up front. Heat shields can rattle, the oil dipstick tube where it secures to the manifold can come loose or snap and vibrate, loose brackets, the fan blades can rub on the shroud, etc. I had a nasty phantom rattle once and it turned out to be a...
