How much can a 5 ton tow?

Hi. I have a quick question for you 5 ton guys. I only have a deuce, and we all know that it is rated to only tow 10,000 lbs. But how much is a m818 or m931 rated to tow? Either on the pintle or in the 5th wheel. And if you have a GCVWR if you could add the veichle weight that would be great. Thanks guys.

m931 has an empty weight of 22,089 lbs. max tow load pintle is 30,000 lbs and max towed load 5th wheel is 55,000 lbs on highway.If its an m931a1 EW is 21,140 lbs pintle tow load is 15,000lbs and 5th wheel towed load is 37,500.

What's with the huge differance between the 931 and the a1? But I'm really looking for the specs on the m818. I think those are a little more in my price range. I was just wondering about the newer stuff.

20,165 -- weight empty
15,000 -- towed with pentle
37,500 -- 5th wheel, Semi-trailer gross tongue weight, including 5th wheel load allowance (15,000)

They will pull far more than they are rated for but you have to consider safety. When I was at Fort Benning I once pulled an old narrow guage railroad box car to DRMO with an M818 and lowboy. When I crossed the scales my gross weight was 125,000 pounds. Never got out of low range but she pulled the load just fine. The Motor Sergeant was not amused.

I do know when you start getting above 60,000lbs gross weight she starts to slow way down on any kind of hill with the NHC 250.

The M813 and M813A1 can carry 10,000 off road and tow 15,000 lbs off road on road you can safetly tow double the off road weights on the highway
!!

The tm 9-2320-260-10 states 15,000 towed load, DOES NOT say for off road, I would think the 15,000 MEANS towed on/off road due to pintle strength, 30,000 (15 tons) would be a lot to be pulled by the pintle.

My uncle while stationed in Germany once towed an M543A2 (36,000#) hooked to a 5 ton tractor and trailer (62,000#) over 100 miles with a multifuel M543A2. This was on a friday night to keep from having to make two trips and spoil his saturday. His supervisors were unimpressed and sent him to Vietnam. His respect for the M543A2 is what made me buy mine.

M39 series are listed in the 211-10 as 30,000# towed Highway, and 15,000# cross country, (same as the data plate in Squirt) I would have assumed the 800's would have been the same, oh well...
This also requires that you stay with the max tongue weight of 3000# highway and 1500# cross country. Squirt with an 1A engine has proved that she will make highway speed with 36,000# in tow. (Yes I know I was over the rating, ok, and yes there was plenty of trailer brake.)

What I don't understand, why if there is the BIG difference between the 211 (39 series) and the 260 (809 series) -10 CAPATITY charts, the running gear, suspension, trans, xcase are the same, can not believe the Cummins makes that much difference.

Even the 211-10-1 (newer release) has the M-39 at 30k, OR are they only using the off road numbers and are going with run whatever on highway?
What is on the data plates? Guys with an 813?

So really with any 5 ton you can tow any deuce or really any 5 ton on a trailer with just the pintle? And you could flat tow really any of them without the added weight of the trailer?

1970 XM818 with M967 bulk 5k tanker loaded with WVO, whole rig weighed 72k on this trip. Did it once a week 500 mile round trip. She did it but hated hills!

Not 55000 on the fifth wheel, but 55000 total trailer weight.

Most weight hauled w/ 5 ton?

So i was just curious on what the most weight you all have hauled with the 923, 931 style trucks?! (or any 5 ton for that matter) Pics of your load would be fun to see too!

The answer varies though, highway or offroad? You could pull much more weight in low range on a private country road than you could on an interstate with lots of traffic around. I would never suggest pulling/hauling more than the GVWR of the vehicle you are operating..

I routinely haul 17-18 tons of lime on this truck. That gives me a gross weight of around 60,000lbs. It's slow but it handles the weight fine (it's a M936 chassis).
