Let me offer my thoughts being familiar with the Florida process. If he has it plated in Fla, his days are numbered. They are pulling all existing titles and your only option (currently) is to go the former military vehicle route. So if you get it, I would put a large chuck of the $18k in an escrow account that guarantees the title is good and transferable. If Fla hasn't canceled it, you should be able to transfer it to your state if they will. They could very well have voided the title and you wouldn't find out until you registered. Now if it has the former military tags, you should be ok.

As for the price, $18K is probably fair for a clean running vehicle with a good top. I have a 94 6.5 4 man with a new top, new paint and a few other updates and I am into mine for about $11k doing it all myself (except paint). If someone offered me $18, I would probably turn it down. If someone offered me $25K, I would seriously consider it.

$700 for shipping sounds very low for FL to NH (assuming that is where you are going). There are a lot, and I mean a lot of scammers out there in the shipping world. They will lie to you then ask for a deposit, and then raise the price. It happens over and over. You should figure around $1 per mile. Maybe less the closer to i95 you can get for pick up and drop off.

FWIW, my dos centavos (oder zwei pfennige):

I lurked around on this site, g503, the craigslist and ebay boards, GP and elsewhere for about six months before deciding to buy.

Locally.

I looked at (and bid) for one sight unseen (I was about to pay a guy to drive two hours, inspect the truck for me and report back - he was also going to ship from Nashville to NoVA for about $900), and I lost the bid by $50. Or it went for $50 more than I was willing to pay which was about $17,500. I "looked at" sales all up and down the east coast.

Other HMMWVs in "similar" condition (meaning: some paint, cleaning up, good/new top/doors, rubber, CLEAN ON-ROAD TITLE and already tagged) were selling locally (mid-atlantic states) for at least that much and on up into the low twenties.

Sure, if you have a shop, a lot of time, do this sort of thing for a living, you can bid (read what some guys have gone through going that route), get a real gem for $8,000 or less and then spend the next year or two trying to get it roadworthy and have that "FORUO" stamp go away somehow - way I understand it several states are already voiding the roadworthiness and calling in the tags/registrations so it's still a gamble either way. So now you have a HMMWV parked on a lot somewhere that might need batteries, a transfer case, an engine, and you've got to get it off the lot in 24 hours and it's 800 miles away.

It can be messy, complicated, or, you can take your time, look into sales, salesmen (guy I bought from has sold umpteen dozen of the things, every Deuce bought by a certain local BBQ chain was through him and he's either a real straight-shooter, a good used car salesman or worse but I think I got a great deal from him all things considered), who's buying what from whom and WHAT ARE THE LOCAL LAWS governing inspection, registration, titling/tagging said vehicle.

Right now there's a handful of early 90s-type HMMWVs I see for sale on the evil auction site and on Steelsoldiers' and g503 classifieds for around $20k, some look better than others.

Since you asked, here's a suggestion: give it some time, look around, you'll find a better deal locally.

In the video he says he replaced all the gauges that weren't working properly. He also states a grounding kit was installed. When he goes to start it you can see the volt meter in the yellow which is normal when the engine is off. When the engine starts the voltmeter is still in the yellow and doesn't move - not normal when the engine is running. Hopefully it was fixed. I would have it checked. The batteries are seriously over rated for the engine and will last a long time when not being charged if everything else is working properly. I would take a handheld voltmeter and check the battery voltage after leaving the headlights on and the engine off for 5 min. They should read around 24 to 26 volts. Then start the engine the battery voltage should go up more than 1 or 2 volts very quickly.

I will be blunt. Florida has issued guidelines regarding the titling of these vehicles, and their decision to begin to revoke titles on some of these vehicles. You need to read the thread by "infidel got me" Re: titling these vehicles in Florida and how they may lose credentialing.

If this vehicle is not up to snuff you may have severe issues. In addition, you appear to live in New Hampshire. Given the weird semi-socialist state that you lives in, you might want to research whether or not they will allow you to drive and title a HMMWV there.

If I were you, I would do my homework. For a few dollars more you can go to the website owned and operated by "Plan B". They restore vehicles of this sort and provide a warranty and title.

You can also go to the classified section here and look for sellers with good feedback.

You have admitted that you do not know much, and as such you should not buy anything at this time. Cars are like women. They all look beautiful from a distance. It is only when you get in close that you can see the damage. It is only when you take on ownership that you truly understand the pathology, and possibly consider the true depth of your mistake.

If other posters above are correct and this vehicle was listed for substantially more money, and now he is selling it for less, he is trying to get out desperately and is trying to make you pay a premium for his mistake. Look at this as the automotive version of a bad divorce. Why would you rush in to marry someone else's disaster. You never want to take up someone else's girlfriend or wife on the rebound because there is always an issue.

Already, other people on this bulletin board have indicated that there are significant concerns with this vehicle. If I were you I would stay away. There is always tomorrow and there will always be another Humvee to purchase.

MHO, your mileage may vary.

T

P.S. - Some of your posts indicate that you are tending towards buying this vehicle. I think you are making an extraordinarily bad choice. I think you are about to step on a very big landmine. You need to step away from this situation and look at it objectively. You are thinking with your heart and not with your head. there are literally 10s of thousands, and possibly 100s of thousands of these vehicles available. Why would you set your heart on this over priced DOG. You have been warned.

I dunno... Since this unit is up for auction, $18K is just the starting point. I wouldn't have a concern the owner is dumping it at a major loss just to get rid of it. He's taking a gamble the auction will go higher. If you can get it for less than $20, it could be a decent deal. In my area, SoCal, trucks in different levels of condition tend to go for this amount.

If it is in fact the truck that sold for $9K as mentioned earlier, the refurbisher was in for another $2-$3K for GP fees, taxes and shipping. Then, they did the needful to get it road worthy, replaced and serviced all the parts and cleaned/painted. There's certainly value to that.

Of course, it's not going to be a frame-off restoration deal at this price, but if you assume you're getting a decent starting point, might be worth it.

My sense (or rationalization) is any GP auction is luck of the draw. Some have gotten full reset trucks for $8K, and some spent $16.5K plus fees and ended up with a hot mess.

In for a penny, in for a pound.

HAve you spoken to an expert (in Maryland they're called "specialists" and the one I spoke with was like someone from the proverbial fairy godmother department of the Army) at your local MVA (DMV) regarding these vehicles?

Looked up the applicable regs online and printed them out for further perusal?

Have you spoken with someone in your state or AO who has actually gone through the steps to get their MV on road?

Those are the steps I'd recommend you follow through to the end of your questions.

Do it logically, thoroughly, and realize you might have to take "no" for an answer, especially if you run up against one (or more) entrenched socialist bureaucratic big fish in little ponds who - right or wrong - might not see it your way and send you on your way without a title.

Good luck, keep us posted.

A sampling of several great looking vehicles in the classified section of this BB.

When you buy a used vehicle you need to shop around, just like you don't marry the first girl you kiss.

I've seen stuff like this before and I'm sensing that it will end in tragedy.

I wish you luck but you seem destined to lead with your heart and you are beyond counseling.

Not sure why you posted if your head was already made up.

Several of us have tried to warn you. You're not listening and your going on and on about his dropping price to 18k and about shipping costing $700, BUT you can buy similar vehicles from multiple sources that work and have valid titles. AND you still have not looked into titling in your neck of the woods.

When I sell vehicles (or anything), I won't drop my prices if it is a good especially if I have invested time and money in it. Why would I or anyone else?

Not sure what else to say.

I understand your point however this was about helping this person TODAY. I was not thinking about posterity and I would have trouble cutting and pasting ALL those linked images.

Thanks and I understand.

My point is the new people should consider looking at the classifieds on this BB to get an idea of what is out there AND support this site.
