Great little adventure!
How did you do w/o snow chains (at least I didn't see any)? If it was me, the chains would have been on from day one.

We had chains with us but didn't need to put them on. The ground had not frozen yet when the snow hit, so the tires were able to 'bite' into the mud under the snow. Had it been hard packed and frozen, the chains would have been on. Some of the hills were a little tricky though. Throttle had to be steady. Going uphill you had to keep your momentum up, and going down, the trucks were kept in low gear. By the time we finally got to pavement, the snow was about gone.
