AXLES

Front - Rear = UHDPX41
Rear - Rear = UHR

Yesterday I wrote Meritor and requested AXLE poop. I received
a reply this morning along w/ several PDF's. Here is the message
that was in the reply to me from Meritor;

"The UHD axle is on old one. There is no catalogue for it. I have attached the BOM,
however, which shows the 6.17 gearset ratio. Make sure that is what your ratio is.
It should also be on the UHDPX41 axle tag. The rear-rear has its own tag #, UHR….. .

I have also attached exploded views and parts list for the UHD and UHR carriers .
You would use the actual BOM for UHDPX41 for the forward carrier parts, even
though you see the drive carrier parts on the exploded views and parts list also.
There is some variation as you might see—the BOM takes precedence for the part #’s..

To see our online catalogues sight for searching for maintenance/service manuals :

http://
www.meritorpartsonline.com
Click Literature on Demand at the bottom of the home page
Choose Axles and follow the directives for finding something.
You might have to download maintenance manuals (MM5 series for drive axle carriers)
to see which carriers are covered, for example UHD, UHR)"

CLICK HERE UHDPX41

CLICK HERE UHD

CLICK HERE UHR

Front Axle =
FDS1807RSA11 AXLE ASSEMBLY
or
FDS1807RSA-50 AXLE ASSEMLBYAUTOM (WET)

Crap, how do we tell the difference between the ...A11 AND TEH ...A50 "WET" ?

My FRONT axle Tag (BELOW) is almost gone.

Here are the files for the front;

CLICK HERE EXPLODED
CLICK HERE BOM ...A11

CLICK HERE BOM ...A50

My FRONT-REAR axle Tag (BELOW) I ASSUME THE GEARS ARE 6:17 ;

FRONT AXLE ADDENDUM;

OK the data plate, 2 pics above, this is actually the axle HOUSING data plate, not the AXLE ASSEMBLY data plate.
The axle HOUSING Data plate is on the front of the DS arm, the axle ASSEMBLY plate is
on the same arm on the BACK of the axle arm. My data assembly plate below shows "I" have a
FDS1807RSA11 AXLE ASSEMBLY.

front-tag-assembly.jpg

( I still wonder what a FDS1807RSA-50 WET axle is now ! ! ! )

EDIT:

I wrote Meritor and asked them about the two front axles the TM says the M916 could have,
here is the conversation starting w/ my questions;

...can you tell us the basic differences between these two axles please?
My TM says my trucks could have had either axle I do believe.

FDS1807RSA11 AXLE ASSEMBLY (My truck has this axle)
or
FDS1807RSA-50 AXLE ASSEMLBYAUTOM (WET)

We are assuming that the only difference is how the bearings are lubed, where
my FDS1807RSA11 we think uses grease and the FDS1807RSA-50 uses oil???

Can we assume that both units will have the same gear ratio by these numbers?

Meritors reply;

The spec numbers have nothing to do with whether they are wet or dry. Seal types might. But the brakes and wheel end group are the same on these axles. The brakes have a 2 degree difference on the brake angle mount. The carrier assembly in the RSA50 is a later version than the RSA11 carrier.

The axle housings are different

Cross tubes are different.

snip

The gear ratios would have to be at the end of the assembly numbers and become part of the assembly #. These BOM’s can show multiple ratios, but in this case the only ratio showing in the BOM’s for both is 6.17. That does not guarantee, however, that this is the only possible ratio these might have been made with.

I like duel alternators , im not doing it to my m916 yet because all is well. I did this with my last plow truck and the second alt ran pump,and charged pump battery, was so nice never having dim lights or battery problems. All i had to do was make and install brackets and hitch up a exciter wire to make alt work , and was nice because if one failed just run a jumper from the other. Sorry i jumped on the thread but it reminded me again if i need more power.

Thank u for the input Cadillac.
I think I would have gone w/ a dual alt system if the bracketry
had been available.

it will be available this summer , I am going to take a alternate that is a power house and build the brackets for all us m916 owners.Sorry but again i will make it not part of the truck just a gen/amp for what ever. I seen in our winters even with all battery and great alternator its a lot for a m916 stock, but i will be doing mods so if you want amps or what ever i will give you some fun stuff.

Heated led headlights

NOTE:

I don't "think" I have covered this in this thread yet...?

These are the HEATED Truck-Lite LED lights.
In winter conditions LEDs do not produce enough heat
to disapate snow and ice, so heated is optimal.

I forgot to put these on my XMAS LIST. :-(

Not only heated but I believe the amperage draw is MUCH less.
I really do need these...

Its a little bit less, 3.6A vs the 3.9A of the stock 6015 lamp.

I have noticed that almost all of the LEDs that I have replaced on my M916 have had nearly the same amp draw albeit a brighter output.

All those in Southern California and Southern Arizona lock your doors,
and stay off the roads! Look for me w/ my 400HP M916 and Schutt 20' ISO Container
Self Loading Trailer, barrellin' down a freeway near you next week
possibly tearin' up the highways and byways of your town!
BE AFRAID! Ha!~

I finally have things to a point where I trust the truck much.
Were going to give it a good work out while gas is somewhat low.
I have driven it all over the place locally, now it is time to hit the road
and smell some roses at 55MPH w/ my new Class A license and
new CA plates and USDOT Number and UCR.IN.GOV PAID IN FULL
and a LOG BOOK and I am now too legit to quit! HA! Silly money sucking laws
are OBSURD.

Monrovia , CA to Fort Huachuca, AZ via Tucson and meeting w/ Mr. 98G's
welder for a little flatbed surprise! I can't WAIT! The M916 is cocked,
locked and ready to rock. (Gawd I hope the heater works! Ha!)
After all that effort to put in an A/C system??? Ha!

I grabbed this insulated, air conditioned, wired NICE mandoor-container
few days ago narrowly winning it by only $200.00.
Little does the first loosing bidder know, that I was done bidding and THEY
lost it by just 2-C notes...

Some things are just meant to be... I have been after a couple of these things
for quite a while. One down, one to go.

EDIT: I have modified my trailer. What you see pictured is another SS members trailer
photo'd at his home. It is a great picture thus why I use it but my trailer is this
trailers identical twin. I have added 2- Pelican storage boxes and next week we weld
down an LMTV LHMC socket. Also, I cut down the lunette mount nose so I can retain the rear roller on
M916. CLICK HERE to read more about this incredible trailer that the DOD paid over
$77,000.00 for in 2009. It still has nubs on the tires this second, that changes in a
just a few sort hours when I pull it out after adding Conspicuity Tape to it.

Hey its PWM! Ya'll must be freezing bout' now!

Thank u for the compliment, we sure try hard...
Were gonna build a beefy removable flatbed for
it next week out of 4"x4"x.25" wall square steel tube
w/ 5" angle iron on the sides for flat-hook ratchet
straps and hitch receiver tubes for stake pockets
and more than likely a 1/4" diamond plate deck.
Should be stout enough to haul a battle ship.

I can't wait to hit the road in it. Some guys dislike
that 16 speed, they say it's too much work...it keeps
me busy. (16 fwd gears plus 2 rev ) It goes 62 MPH "." ,
BUT, it will do it hauling 106,000 pounds! HA! RATED!

and, A Happy and Prosperous New Year to All...

Greetings
We have been a little cold lately ,mostly single digits with some below zero nights. It has warmed up some and dropped a little snow, most people hate it but I love it when it is in the 20's and snow is falling. I have driven many military vehicles over the years but never a M-916 with the Cat transmission, I have always wanted to try one. The more I keep seeing the 916's the more I want one, not sure the wife will approve though.

I drove my m920 up my 18% grade drive way after it had been sleeting for a good hr . it had the stock tires on it at the time. It bunny hopped all the way to the top. Don't think I want to try it again anytime soon lol

Just have the Mrs. read THIS ....and what did you pay for your M923, and what are
they selling for now? :)

and;

R_Racing, were gonna have to get you a video camera one of these days!
Have you checked to make sure the front axle engages and the rear axles
are interlocking? I know my truck has LOCKERS in the back, well I know
from the sticker that was on it, that I saved and photo'd. I would think they
all have that, I mean what would be the argument they all do NOT have
lockers? I have not looked up the TM P/N's but if there is just one diff.......
OR are the lockers the reason for your propensity to "Bunny Hop" ?

From my understanding all m916s and m920s have lockers in the rears but not the front. The Hopping was from traction issues remember it was icy . The tires would burn thru the ice and grab asphault then lunge forward. then sit and spin till they melted thru the ice again then lunge forward again. I'm just glad I didn't slide to the bottom after I got to the top. all axles were engaged. Big pucker factor it was the day I was bringing it home for the first time!!

A truetrac is not a locker, it is a limited slip differential. It is still a lot better than an open differential.

One of my navy trucks has Detroit lockers in each of the rear axles and the other one has an air locker.

Anyone fully knowledgeable about Federal Regulations on clearance lights?
I have seen the posters but I am still a little unsure on what all I have to
do to make the added flatbed compliant w/ Federal Lighting Requirements / Laws.

So as a tractor only, all my lights and reflectors are up to snuff.

Now I added a removable flatbed that is bolted on, so as I see it, I need to add;

1- Add a 3-Light ID bar across the back, middle, because I am over 80" wide.

2- Add 2 red reflectors at the rear, far left and right.

3- Add 2 red clearance lights at the very rear on both sides.

4- Add Conspicuity tape rear and sides.

I am under 30' long so I believe I do not need amber lights on the side at the
front of the flatbed.

Correct? Richard you reading this?
