...the most important difference between the HMMWV & the H1 one is obvious - the H! was designed and certified for civilian use. It has the proper provenance from the Feds at the EPA/NHTSA/DOT that ALLOW it to be registered.

Funny, isn't it? If the law/rule/regulation/etc., states 'don't register an HMMWV', then what is so hard to understand?

Who gives a rat's hind end what some moronic paper-pusher says in a letter or otherwise?

If they give you any guff about a title, say "I made it myself from parts." If they say you didn't... and there is no way for them to know or prove ANYTHING even if they wanted to... take a tire off, take a picture. See.. one big part, one little part.

I know a guy who worked for AM General.. still does I think. He got angry when I said I would love a "Real" M998 and that I didn't care for the H2-H3 or even the H1. His response was that the M998 is just "Equipment" not a vehicle. They really hate what they built, and just want to sell chevy trucks with ugly plastic bodies to soccer moms. That's it. The M998 is a threat to them in a major way. Who will buy an H2... the gayest thing on wheels next to the Miata and the VW Bug... when they can buy the REAL THING from the .gov for less money?

If a VW kit car, SMART car, or those 3 wheeled bike things are considered "safe" an M998 is no danger to anyone but a car salesman's bottom line. Screw him, and the bureaucrat who does his bidding.

When I went into DMV to register my Ferret, they brought into a private office to wait while they went through all the paperwork trying to figure out what to register it as. It took them over an hour of checking and making phone calls but it ended up being registered as a Jeep.

The people there were so nice and were determined to figure out how to get it registered. This was actually at the main DMV office in the second largest city in Alabama.

A few hours later, another ferret was registered and it only took them 10 minutes at that point.

Am general did not build the H2 or H3........ Now nobody does
He is from Portage here in Michigan and commutes down to Indiana to the plant that makes/made H2's. As far as I know he still has a job there. I could have sworn he said AM General.

Maybe they are going to do something new. He's in Dealer Support... so if they aren't producing, I can't imagine him having a job.

General Motors built the H2's and H3's not AM General.

Relative 'safety' of the M998 is not the issue. The Big problem with trying to register a 'wannabe soldier' M998 is that the VIN number doesn't contain 17 digits & doesn't come up in the computer systems. This throws DMV workers into convulsions...

Similar situation occurs when same DMV workers try to pull up a VIN on a CUCV, as it doesn't come up as a K-series Chevrolet truck. As for the m998 being a danger to a car salesman's bottom line, how's that the case when the H1 hasn't been made in years? And as for the 'I made it myself' angle; many states will make you show receipts and photos of the parts used in the vehicles construction in order to get it titled if you don't already have a title.

I'll agree that the M998 has traveled many a road in military hands since they began building them - but through a logistical twist years ago, some of the HMMWV's made it into public hands through GL or similar entity. They evidently weren't supposed to be rogue, but now a few are.

Curious -

63foxtrot - your info says that you are located in Los Angeles, CA, yet you're trying to get this HMMWV registered in AZ?

Why?

Will California DMV not let you register it there?

Pre 1981 nothing had a "standard" 17 digit VIN... My Fairlane doesn't. I'm quite certain kit cars do not either. Both are handled easily by our "DMV." I can't help but think other states should be similar.

How does it threaten car salesmen/manufacturers? The same way the MUTT Jeeps threatened Wrangler AND F-150/Bronco sales. By being in the marketplace as an option. 3 years ago we paid to shred perfectly good non-MVs for the same reason... Who would spend $50k for a "Tough" F-150 when they can spend $20k and get an M998 that out-classes it in every way that matters to image or utility driven buyers?

Wanna-be? Maybe... Or perhaps a larger segment of the buying public doesn't want built in stability controls, TPS sensors, padded dashboards, miles of gaudy trim, power windows, Escort quality ground clearance, air bags on every surface, piles of useless trim, and cheap chrome.

Some people just like things that WORK.

Edit: I realize I complained about "trim" twice... but that's how much I really hate it, so it stays.

Heath - I'm all for older vehicle ownership, but there's a bit of misquote in your comment above -

The M151 MUTT wasn't pulled from potential civilian ownership because of it's perception as being a competitor to the sales of any civvy F150/Jeep/Bronco, it had EVERYTHING to do with the fact that it developed a rep as being a soldier killer in rollovers... the powers that be opted to keep the MUTT from POV status by cutting the MUTT's in half in an attempt to prevent liability lawsuits.

The M151 Mutt (Military Unit Tactical Truck) :: M151 Home >> Excerpt:

"Testing
In 1980 the Army's 9th Infantry Division was selected as the test unit for the M151.An Army health hazard assessment revealed whole-body vibration as a significant health hazard. Vehicle crew members also suffered kidney and back injuries attributable to shock and vibration sustained during testing. The health hazard assessment report recommended redesigning the seats to include the addition of more padding to reduce both vibration and shock, redesigning the vehicle suspension system to increase its shock absorbency, and entering FAV (Fast Attack Vehicle) operators into a medical surveillance program tailored to the identification of whole-body vibration health effects.
Jeeps are built for off road use and could be unsafe at high speed. The rear suspension system on M151 vehicles was designed for rough terrain usage by stabilizing the stock. Military personnel operating the M151 are given special training in use of the vehicle. On paved roads, where the general public would normally use a vehicle, these vehicles are readily subject to rollover accidents. The Administrator, National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, U.S. Dot, identified the M151 vehicles as a hazard to the safety of public highway users.
Therefore, for public safety, DOD renders them inoperable prior to sale (i.e., cut or crush the unitized body and suspension system). "

I don't make this stuff up - and word I get from HMMWV owners is that they aren't exactly cheap to own or easy to maintain -
