Colorado Bill SB19-054 RE: (Former) Military Vehicle Motor Vehicle Regulation

Ahab - Thanks for asking about out of state signatures, we had a few petitions in Colorado get rejected for that very reason. This petition is to show general support, not for a candidate, statewide initiative, recall, or referendum. This means that the more signatures the better, and they can be from anywhere.

The donations go to covering the cost of getting the petition to more people.
Thank you to all who have signed!! The petition is just fine with out of sate signatures, this will not be to get something added to a ballot so it is ok. As for the donations, I didn't know this was even an option, I'm trying to see where this money is going so for now please don't donate as I'm not sure where it is ending up. For those of you that have donated, I will send an update once I figure this out.

As far as I can tell after 21 days the funds, less a fee from change.org and their biller, will go to the owner of the petition. I can for a fee ($20 was the first increment that I saw) send the petition out through change.org's advertisers. At this point if you give $10 about $8.90 will go to me. I had not intended to advertise the petition as I felt the most receptive audience would be here and other MV related sites. I'm not sure what to do with this money, and for now, would prefer to just let everyone keep their donations until we have a specific use for the money. I'm not trying to be ungrateful, just honest. Thanks again to all for signing, we're almost at 100 supporters.

Funny how ugly becomes beautiful when disaster strikes. Essentially we all know we keep this vehicles in reserve for our neighborhoods, if disaster strikes. It can be days before the National Guard shows up.

Allowing the use of the road is really a small token for the state to pay for the costs to keep these private vehicles in good repair for the NEXT emergency.

Funny how you are everyone's buddy when deep snow and ice leave many stranded.
My former club in Colorado fought for years to get the law passed. Now with another stroke of a pen its going away. And to accomplish what? Make the roads and highways safer? Sure, make it easy to legally smoke pot, then motor vehicle accidents increase but, hey, lets further legislate all those ugly, menacing looking FMVs on the road.

So if I lived in CO, I might leverage MV's like this. I'd call a local TV reporter. Tell them you have a great story, but the timing must be right to air it. Discuss what how our MV's benefit to local community, discuss heritage, etc, and having the ability to drive on roads is a must, otherwise no one will keep them. Then wait for the biggest, baddest, snow storm and pick up the reporter and crew ( or escort, tow etc) and show them what we can do. Have them interview the people stuck in snow banks or others towed to safety. Tell them the safety net that saves lives is now gone and the law needs to change. "The live saved could be yours"

"I'm Katie Summer News Channel 7 reporting to you live in what appears to be the worst storm this year. I'm in a six wheel drive military vehicle, but I not with the National Guard, I'm with a military truck owner (Phil Intheblank) who risks his life to help others in need. But there's a problem. These vehicles which provide a safety net for the community have been stopped from helping others. In fact, this could be considered illegal thanks to a new law in CO. Will be right back with more on this story"

Anytime you rescue someone, take pictures and video. Display the video at all MV functions, parades, etc.

I like it...
I might have to wash the truck, that always makes it snow.

As one of the signers of the petition said "Retired military vehicles have many uses after war, just like our Vets!"

Thank you! Now I know where to start. I have been trying to figure out where this nonsense was coming from.
I wish we could get AAMVA to change their position on this, that is where the bad information and advise is coming from.

UPDATE ON DONATIONS - I have to apologize to Reworked LMTV, I didn't understand what he meant when he posted that the donations go to covering the cost of getting the petition to more people. I worked through Change.org's help desk and that is exactly what the donations go to. These donations will go to Change.org in the petitions name to buy more "advertising" of the petition on their website. Now that I know how this is working feel free to donate if you like. I have no idea how efficient this advertising is, but I have no control over it, so I will leave it to all of you. I am going to start a new post with the link on here to get some more signatures.

Just for the record, unless you live up in the mountains (Denver is not there, it's in the flat plains of the state) we don't get much snow. I totally agree with your plan, but it never happens. These trucks suck on just iced-over roads, and need some snow depth to get a grip, which is exceedingly rare. When I moved here I assumed we got tons of snow, but have been really disappointed (I love snow!). If the opportunity comes, I will definitely do it though, complete with a giant pot of hot chocolate brewing in the back!

Funny story about it though. Growing up in Cleveland, I would regularly take my big offroad trucks out in snow storms to help pull people out of the stuck. We've only had one storm in Denver, in the 12 years that I've lived here, that was actually impressive, which was about 36" in 24 hours. I went out in my '79 K5 Blazer with 42" tires, like I use to, to pull people out. However, what became apparent is that because it snows so little here, the towns don't own many plows or other snow removal equipment (and they don't use salt like the NE USA). I looked it up once, and the city of Denver, roughly 150 square miles, only had about 50% more plows than my home town in Ohio of only 4.2 square miles. So the plows could only keep a handful of the main streets in town plowed, leaving side streets 3' deep with a 4-5' berm from the plows. I ended up spending the whole evening pulling vehicles OFF the roads, that had managed to get onto the driveable streets but could no longer get onto side streets.

We just get the reputation because the mountains will actually get a few feet at a time, and all the invading Californians live in the plains of Denver and think every flake that falls is the snowpocalypse.

Then to the Mountains with chains, tow straps, snatch blocks, shovels, and whatever ! Onward!

When Shirley Maclaine wrote a tell-all, Sinatra said, “It's amazing what a broad will do for a buck.” (To which she replied, “He ought to know.”)

Until only relatively recently, the only jobs generally available to women (no matter their intelligence, education, or skill level) were menial or secretarial.

This was dictated by the 'boys". So, yeah, it is amazing what a "broad" would do for a buck, none had much choice otherwise.

I assume this means ALL military vehicles including the M1008 and M1009 (Chevy Truck and Blazer). I'm glad I got the 5 year collector plates on my M1008 but now I'm considering selling it out of state unless this can get turned around.

I believe so. Don't give up yet. Get involved. A bunch of us are working in the background on this.
