Correct Model Year

I just picked up a new to me deuce that is titled as a 1988 but I know that was the rebuild year. How can I find out when the truck was originally built?

Looks like a late model USAF truck with split brakes.

It likely is really an 88 based on that.

the motor was built under a 1986 contract but that doesn't mean anything ( my '69 deuce has a '87 motor in it)

1989 was about the last of it. Yours is an 88 or 89 judging by the brakes.

Looks like it could be a '88.

Could also be an '87. My Air Force Deuce (from Peterson AFB) is an '87.

An Air Force truck will have a blue warranty tag under the main info tag to the left of the glovebox. It has the delivery date stamped on it.

If thats the original data plate still on the dash the VIN should tell you what year it is or the contract date will.
