HELP! Rebuilt engne less than 700 miles. Engine started acting irregular, low vacuum reading, sooty spark plugs. Will no longer idle correctly.

Recap: 1. Engine rebuilt by machine shop.
Ran great for around 500 miles. Properly broke in engine.
Began stalling momentarily as if running out of gas or loss of ignition.
Engine finally would not idle for any length of time and had a very rough idle as though running out of gas or loss of ignition
Found plugs were carbon fouled indicating a over rich mixture.
Replaced all plugs (original equipment from Midwest) and rebuilt carburetor. set float level etc.

2. Rebuilt carburetor ETW1 - left governor alone, changed all plugs. checked for spark at no 1 cylinder with vintage 6, 12 , 24 VDC timing light.
No change in symptoms with the exception that the plugs were no longer wet but were black sooted. Tried fuel mixture adjusting screw and had little response between 1/2 to 1 1/2
turns of the adjusting screw

3. Vacuum tester from the start has shown low pressure readings and even fell some.

4, Tried moving the timing a few degrees with no noticeable change in performance,

5. If left to sit for a prolonged period of time the engine will start (but not easily) and will run rough as if there is a miss. timing problem, or running out of gas then will just slowly come to a stop.

Should I replace the coil? The points were replaced new at rebuild. Or should I start all over by timing the engine using the method of without it running or replace the points coil or ??

Any suggestion will be greatly appreciated. I also wonder whether I should check the compression even if the engine is 500 miles old from rebuild.?

Thank you...Wilco on the compression test. The valves were adjusted at rebuild. Wondering if the valve adjustment is out of whack and whether it alone could cause this much trouble?

I have a 24VDC electric fuel pump (inline) back up and use the standard dodge 230 CI 6 cylinder civilian (glass bowl) fuel pump that does not have the built in vacuum pump. The only vacuum line installed comes off of the intake manifold for the windshield wipers. There are the two air lines to the distributor. from the carburetor horn and there is the crankcase ventilation system tube that I do not know if it would affect the vacuum?

Thanks for the advice, I will definitely check the wiper line for leaks,

Ordered a set of points, condenser, rotor and a new coil (black U.S.A. made) coil from Memphis Equip as back ups if needed. Will be checking compression as soon as I purchase then get the tester I need. Do not want any Chinese junk testers and do not wish to support the C.C.P.. if I can help it.

If you are looking for a US made military issued compression tester, I have a few NOS ones. PM sent

I was not aware anyone in the US was making coils that would fit the M37 distributor. The only M37 coil I see on the Memphis Equipment site is the chrome one, which is Chinese and known to have quality issues. Did you find something not listed in the M37 section?

Peter Debella at Debella Jeep Parts did an extensive search for US manufacturers willing to make a run of these coils, but no one was willing. He finally contracted with a Chinese manufacturer to make a run and worked with them on the requirements. They are black coils. Eery report I've heard on these is good. I have one in my truck with about 10,000 miles on a Debella coil that has been working flawlessly.

I placed an auction low ball bid on a Pittsburg Tools compression tester that will end tomorrow. I am not raising the bid. I would be interested in your compression tester. Please send me details. I just purchased and tested two 6V, 12V, 24V timing lights that were used for the older vehicles that had 6V, 12V and 24V systems. One of the testers was military surplus and has the adapter for the shielded waterproof ignition systems used by the military. Both work...and are a bit unique.

Thanks for this vital info. Wish I had waited...your post is very important.
I bought this because it shows the country of manufacture as the USA and t he pictures on Ebay did not look like shiny chrome of the Chinese product.

Am trying to cancel order if this item is Chinese Made instead of "as advertised" in the ad as manufactured in the U.S.A. Sent MECO a cancellation request explaining this.

Well, maybe they found someone in the US to make a run of them? That would certainly be an interesting development.

If it was black and made in US, I'd wonder if it was NOS. Those are getting harder to find these days,

Order with MECO cancelled and reordered the Da Bella coil today...Thanks again for the info. I guess MECO realized that the manufactured in the USA statement in the ad was incorrect so they accepted my premise to cancel the order if it was the run of the mill shiny chrome Chinese product.

Interesting that the coil on MECO's website does not say anything about where it was made, but their eBay ad still says "Country/region of manufacture: United States".
