Recap: 1. Engine rebuilt by machine shop.
Ran great for around 500 miles. Properly broke in engine.
Began stalling momentarily as if running out of gas or loss of ignition.
Engine finally would not idle for any length of time and had a very rough idle as though running out of gas or loss of ignition
Found plugs were carbon fouled indicating a over rich mixture.
Replaced all plugs (original equipment from Midwest) and rebuilt carburetor. set float level etc.
2. Rebuilt carburetor ETW1 - left governor alone, changed all plugs. checked for spark at no 1 cylinder with vintage 6, 12 , 24 VDC timing light.
No change in symptoms with the exception that the plugs were no longer wet but were black sooted. Tried fuel mixture adjusting screw and had little response between 1/2 to 1 1/2
turns of the adjusting screw
3. Vacuum tester from the start has shown low pressure readings and even fell some.
4, Tried moving the timing a few degrees with no noticeable change in performance,
5. If left to sit for a prolonged period of time the engine will start (but not easily) and will run rough as if there is a miss. timing problem, or running out of gas then will just slowly come to a stop.
Should I replace the coil? The points were replaced new at rebuild. Or should I start all over by timing the engine using the method of without it running or replace the points coil or ??
Any suggestion will be greatly appreciated. I also wonder whether I should check the compression even if the engine is 500 miles old from rebuild.?
