Let's chase this Air-Traffic-Count tangent for a moment.

Last month an interesting video was shared about the SHUTDOWN of U.S. Airspace immediately following the events of 9/11 (2001). I'm sharing it again here to illustrate just how many aircraft are in the air simultaneously.

PLEASE bear in mind that this event happened at about the 8 o'clock A.M. hour EASTERN TIME. You will note that the number of aircraft over the western U.S. is at this time of day (0700 Central, 0600 Mountain, and 0500 Pacific) for fewer than one might think. That is simply because of the TIME-DIFFERENTIAL.... The west coast simply was not yet awake!

Pay attention to the Flight Count in the lower right hand corner.

And, the time is shown in the lower left hand corner.

As far as I remember, only five C5A's have ever crashed. One in Vietnam, and it was shot down, and one at Ramstein AFB. The others I don't recal. The cause was a #1 engine thrust reverser. It was in the reverse thrust position, during takeoff. Due to the thrust reverser being in the wrong position, one wing was going faster then the other. The flight crew applied max power, to try and get more lift. All that did was make things worse. The pilot realize that the aircraft was not going to fly, and that due to the unequal thrust, the aircraft had drifted to the side. Directly in his flight path was, (and still is) a well known Gasthaus, on the entrance road to the AFB. It sits on the edge of a forest. So the pilot sat the aircraft down hard, rather then plow into the crowed Gasthaus. Thirteen of the seventeen personal on board died. The ball of fire and smoke was clearly visible from my house in K-Town.

The B/W photos are the Boeing 377, the Flight Engineers station, and the Pilot and Co-pilot Flight Deck. The color photo's are the Super Guppy's Flight Deck and Flight Engineers Station. Not a lot of change to the Flight Deck and Flight Engineers Station from the late 40s to today.

Interesting. That was the reason for my enlistment back in the winter of 1980.

U.S citizens taken hostage by a foreign government?!

I thought for sure there was war coming. I intended to be a part of it.

I was young. I was impulsive.

I had never before now heard about this plan.

Why would you jump out of a perfectly good aircraft?!

Reminds me of our "Drill Sargeant" in USN Boot Camp (in the Navy we called them Company Commanders).

He thought submariners just weren't right. They couldn't be:

Because why would anybody sink a perfectly good floating vessel, a ship, on purpose?!

I'm just trying to comprehend the stresses placed on that C130's airframe during landing AND take-off.........................

(successful landing, not the "break apart" type landing) glad no one was hurt during that episode too!
