Hummv rims om M1028

I am picking up a M1028 in a week or so. I have a question or two to ask:
!. Which hummer rim is best the 8 bolt or the 12 bolt?
2. How much lift, if any, will I need to fit these under the truck?
3. How much of a spacer will I need to fit the rims and tires correctly?

I know that I need the right run flat for the rim, the 8 bolt run flat is different from the the 12 bolt run flat. The big question how can I tell the difference in the run flats? I want to do this right the first time.

On lifting the truck is best to do a full suspension lift? or do as some local people who lift the trucks using just a spring block.

Is is worth the time and money to change out the rear drums for disk brakes? If changed out will the brake valve have to be changed out? and do I have to remove or disable the valve that senses the load?

1) 12 bolts are better
2) 6"
3) 2"
You do not need run flats
suspension lift no front blocks they are illegal
rear disk brakes are nice I have it on my k10, get rid of the load valve.

Click the link in my signature for my specs. If you don't need Beadlocks run the factory 16.5" wheels. They have worked out well for me on 4" of lift.

If you want the 37" Hummer tires and wheels let me know, we sell those for $100/Tire and $50/Wheel. We can also add welded centers to get your backspacing set (eliminating the spacers and adding wheel strength). We can also powder coat the wheels any color after welding if you would like.

I pass through Jacksonville, AL pretty frequently, good to see you on here.

I don't do offroading but I do use my 1008 on the farm. I pull a gooseneck cattle trailer and gooseneck hay trailer and anything else that I need to move. I put 2 inches of lift on all 4 corners and used 2 inch spacers on all 4 wheels. I built my own zero rate blocks, bolted them in and am very satisfied with the results. I am running the 8 bolt 36.5 inch bias tires with run flat and have not had any problems with rubbing.

I intend to run HMMWV tires on my 1028 when I pick it up as well and have been interested in how the HMMWV wheels would work out as well. Is it possible to run the 37s with no lift and just trimming the fenders? I know from my Cherokee that if a tire won't fit, cut til it does. :D Will it possible to trim enough to get away with 0-2" of lift on the 1028?

I wasn't sure if the stock CUCV wheels were 16.5" or not, so I might just stick with them as I won't be wheeling a huge amount in the truck.

Do not use 8 bolt humvee rims with 37" radials. They are only good for 36" bias ply tires

You have to use the 12 bolt rims with the 37" radials.

The stock 1008, 1028, 1031 rims are 16".

Humvee tires are 16.5" rims.

i have them on my 1028 and they fit the rear well however i have m101 bed on the rear and have the zero rates on the front with 2 inch spacers on the front as well. i did some slight trimming with a sledge hammer to make the tires not rub. i have a right and a left finder with the wheel well too that are being readied to go to paint. they make a great improvement on dropping the rpm as well as making the truck not so loud. I got mine from Trail worthy fab. his prices are still pretty 12 bolt wheels are $75 each and the tires are as low as $65 each. service is good too. they send new o rings and valve stims with each new wheel. i recomend their services. you can also have them recenter the wheel to do away with the need for the spacer if you so wish. I enjoy my cucv and it has been a blessing hope yours is even better than mine.

Best wishes.

For us hmmwv guys, it is a no no to mix 8 bolt rims and radial tires. I get many hmmwv's in with this mix and I change them asap. Remember, they were changed for a reason!

the 8 bolts are not rated for the tire pressures ran with the radials. you need 12 or 24 bolt wheels for radials

here is a link for wheels an tires Trail Worthy Fab
far as that 8 bolt link to pirate4X4 ,looks like internet chatter, just like this post!
I have 8 bolts ,that I got new weld in centers for ,no problem so far.
Get the plastic bead lock inserts, they work great! But be sure to ask how to change them out.
The back end is no problem, the front you will have to lift or move the front ahead or both.
Triming is ugly, and leaves sharp edges.:grd:

I only linked that thread, because it does have some correct info in it.

Just because you have not experienced a problem, does not mean the information I posted is not correct.

Do your homework.

And I only pointed out that there wasn't any experts speaking [factory rep's or such]
no, i'm not an expert by any means, but it would like to see what a factory engineer said first hand.

I recall when the first radials came out for the Humvee, they came out with 12 bolt rims at the same time. I remember a friend(motorpool mechanic) informing me of the incompatibility back then. I think he said they sent out a notice(maybe a TM revision?). At the time, I had 8 bolt rims and 36 bias ply tires on a pickup truck I owned then. (yup, i had the rims and tires when they were brand new for the first Humvee). I haven't used the humvee rims or tires until recently(37" radials) on my M1008. It's been almost 20 years, but I remember what he told me.

I do know there is a difference in rim strength.

fwiw, I have 5 more of those "vintage" 8 bolt rims, brand new in the military boxes, from back then. Maybe I'll dig them out someday.
