MEP-005 fuel pump/filter questions

I few months ago I replaced my day tank and found lots of crap in it.
I finally decided to check and replace/clean the fuel pump filters.

When I checked the part number for the filters it took me to the red filters below but when
I took the filters out of my original pumps I had the tan ones pictured below.
I’m curious if one filter is better than the other.

I also tested both my original pumps and found that only one works.

I have a couple spares I have questions about.

I have a pump that looks like my originals that’s got lots of crap in the filter and seems to be stuck.

I also have two facet pumps that came off a parts 004 and both seem to work although I haven’t tested them for
volume yet. I don’t know if they originally came with the generator and if they are reliable pumps.

Any ideas or suggestions?

Thanks,
Brian

The pump that doesn't work I'm willing to bet that you can take it apart and clean it up and restore it to functionality. These things are pretty robust and there's not much that can critically fail to kill them. As for the pump strainers I couldn't tell you if there's even a difference between them other than color.

If you are day tank was dirty you might want to change the other two fuel filters and clean out the oil water separator. Let me know if you need filter numbers

I've done a lot to this generator since I purchased it in 2012 but I never had to work on the fuel pumps. I will take them apart and
see what I find. I Purchased Ray70's spin on fuel adapters and I'm installing them at the same time. Good news, I didn't find any dirt
in the fuel pump filters or other fuel filters. I did notice two of my fuel lines are soaked with fuel. Time to replace them.

Thanks,
Brian

Thanks Guyfang:

I tested my failed pump again and it worked for a short time and hasn't worked since.
There is no continuity between the lead and ground so I have a break in the wire or internal to the pump.

In your experience are the Facet pumps reliable?

Is there an inline capacitor on the pump? If so, cut it out and hook up 24 VDC to the wire and ground the pump. It might work. The Cap is for RFI. Not really needed unless you hear strange noise on your radio.

The pumps are VERY dependable. But time and crud can kill them. The CAP problem is long known and we just cut them out and fixed the wire. Soak the pump in something to loosen the moving parts up.

Just make sure both your pumps are the flow through type. That means if one dies, the other pump will still continue to pass fuel to the day tank.

EDIT: I just went back and looked at the pictures. Yep, you have in line Caps. So give it a try.

I tried bypassing the capacitor. Still doesn't work.
The pumps were never sticking but I took them apart and cleaned the pistons.
I can't find part numbers for the Facet pumps but I will check for flow thru.

Thanks

I meant I couldn't find part numbers on the Facet pumps I have to verify they are the correct parts. :)
I did take them apart per that diagram. Everything was in good shape.
It doesn't seem to be making an electric connection internally.

I will let you know if I figure it out or I will use one of the other pumps.

What I found in the past is a buildup of gunk to the point where the pump would run for a bit then it would get hot and things would expand then it would jam up. Getting it really clean is definitely important

I do have one more pump that is jammed. I am soaking it and will see how that works.
I used polishing compound on the other pumps to remove the varnish. What did you use to clean yours?

Depends. Inv used alcohol, gasoline, acetone, and in 1 rare case of how in the hell did this ever work, carb soak cleaner. That was the one that was so badly gummed up I couldn't get the Piston out and had to resort to 120 PSI of compressed air into the output. This was successful in the disassembly of the pump at the cost of minor hearing loss and a little bit of sheetrock.

I usually use denatured alcohol. That has cleaned out all my pumps.
I'm trying the denatured alcohol now. Will see if that works.

I have most of those chemicals. I will try them if needed. I did try 100psi but it didn't help.
If I try again I will wear a head set. Thanks for the warning. :)

I make my own schnapps. The first run, the first part of what comes out of the still, is poison. It is also very high in alcohol. I save it and we use it all over the place to clean things. I used some first run to loosen up some fuel pumps from a bucket loader not real long ago. Tossed them in a container and put the lid on. A day or two later, clean as a whistle. My Schnapps ain't bad either.

Now that sounds like a plan. I assume it's illegal to send poison thru the post office.
Never mind, they would probably lose it anyway. Have you tried it in :coffee: or do you drink it straight?

First run is just for cleaning. Farmers use it to keep the toilets from freezing in the barn. Now my Product, is some fine stuff! I let it age for 5 years before tapping it. The Apple schnapps is the best. Cherry and Plum are good enough to sip also. I only drink schnapps straight. If you mix schnapps with anything, you might as well go buy some cheap stuff and save doing all the work of making it! Come over and have a snort!

I might just come visit. My wife may travel to Germany in the next year or two for work.
She has a relative somewhere in Germany but can't remember where.
I will plan to tag along. I drink mostly beer but Apple Schnapps I have no problem drinking. :)
