Gm started to build the 6.2 J code in 1982 any truck with non emissions - 1 ton , 3/4 ton truck and 3/4 ton suburbans and vans would have the J code they are not just a military use engine just a non emissions engine no EGR.
Don't buy too much into the J code thing. Blocking off a EGR'ed 6.2 is basically the same effect. Heck I used to be on a GM diesel forum and swapping in a J code intake manifold was the "in" thing to do.
