or at least part of it! Rice and myself might have stumbled on to something with the VIN numbers and mfrs. I need to take a look and a number of VINs to see if there's a pattern. What I'm interested in is the last 9 numbers in the VIN and of those only the first 4.
Example; 0524-10045.
I'm only looking at the first 4, in this case 0524. If you don't want your VIN public just list it as 0524-xxxxx. Also please post the mfr of your truck aka AM General, Kaiser Jeep American Products Etc. I've posted the following list before.
0524- M275A2 wo/w
0525- M35A2 wo/w
0528- M49A2C
0530- M185A3 Im not sure if there are any built at this serial range
0532- M109A3
0534- M45
0535- M756A2
0536- M764
0539- M35A2 w/w
0540- M35A2C dropside
0546- M36A2

There has always been conflict but what we've been seeing is that the the last 2 digits of the first 4 denote body style. My list shows 0540 as a drop side, Rice's truck is a dropside and has 0940. In the 0525 the last 2 seem to denote a fixed side cargo (25). Now I'm wondering if the first one or two numbers might represent the mfr. This won't work with the 1950s trucks just the multifuelers from the mid sixties up. So, if you have those last 9 in the format like above please post them for my study. Might be nothing at all but deserves a looksee!

TIA

Two more for your study:
M756A2C W/W (from photo of tag of pipeline deuce at Clark Truck Parts 1995): 040-37770-0535-10007
M49A2C W/W (my fuel tanker deuce): 353418-68-0328-10517

Both by Kaiser Jeep.

Never confirmed the year of my deuce, but has gone with 1968 since the DRMO auction description in 1995.

Thanks Nickd. While you are there can you have a look at the VIN on his M108 wrecker if he still has it?

That number fits your research, but who knows, cause the NSN # on my data plate is for a 2 1/2 ton dump truck, but it reads 2 1/2 ton cargo truck without winch. Go figure!

Its looking like this so far. All the first 2 numbers must have been used 2 or more years, or some years no trucks were ordered.
01 1966- early 67
02 1967 & 1968
03 late 68-69?
04 1969-70
05 1970-71
06 1977
07
08
09 1984,1985 1986

0539, Kaiser M35A2 wo/w, year unknown but probably 67-70, correct NSN for a M35A2 wo/w. Rebuilt at Tooele in '89, possibly winch was removed then. Any clues to look for to see it it was originally equipped with a winch?

I know of many 05 trucks that are 1969s. The 0535s are pipelines and 1969 was the only years I've found with the exception of Bjorns bed. Need to find some more 05s in a different body number to see where they fit. This is interesting.

My bed has its own set of tags. It was made by Metro Engr $ Mfg and is dated Feb 1960.
The original pipeline variants were regular cargo trucks with the beds swapped out as needed.
Image of tags below, should have some better pictues somewhere...

It appears Kaiser Used 1-1966, 2-1967, 3- 68, 4- 69, 5-70 with some numbers carried over in the following year.
It appears when AM General started production they may have started with the 05 but ran several years before changing to the next number. Maybe when the military ordered a large order of trucks they used those beginning 2 numbers until that order was finished.
What do you think? We see some trucks listed out of sequence but maybe they were just sold or titled with the incorrect year on the paperwork.
I saw a 1970 M35A2 w/w cab and chassis sell at auction Saturday that was 0539-12941.

AM General M35A2 W/W here. 0539-1515x. The number above it is NK00S6-72. I always thought this was a 1970 but after the discussion on Green Six, I wonder if the -72 in the other number means anything. (Maybe it's a 1972?)
