Was 1970 when AM General started making the deuces? 05 would be a 1970 Kaiser but if AM G started in 1970, it could be a 72 and still have the 05 in the serial number

V.I.N / O.E. Identification Data Plate

Kenneth,

I purchased mine through Oshkosh Equipment and was told it is a 1971.
The OE ID Plate reads as follows,
Truck, Cargo 2 1/2 Ton, 6X6 M35A2, WO/W
Stock# 2320-077-1616
Identification # 04E-89871
MFD. by General Products Division
Jeep Corporation
Contract # DAAE 06-70-C-0001

Hope this helps,
Jeff

OOOPS Forgot some numbers.

Sorry, I forgot to add the last part of the ID, It reads as follows,
04E-89871 0525-20558,
and the last set do match the numbers on the frame behind steering gear box.
Jeff.

The 0525 would show yours was a 1970 regular bed deuce, the 20558 shows it was a high sequential number, therefore it is most likely a 1971. I see also from yours that some are using the first part of info from the data plate instead of the frame number which is the 0525-20558 as you stated. I was curious why some were showing 04E or 04L, etc. Thanks a lot.

I have no idea what all this means, but here it is:
Stock #2320-077-1616
ID #04N-93271-0525-24551
Contract #DAAE 06-70-6-0001

Non-turbo, no winch, cargo bed.

The serial number 0525 24551 would indicate a late 1970 or 1971. The last 2 numbers of the 1st set of numbers would look like its a 71. Thanks

Mine is a 1972 AMG M35A2 WW 04M39871
Is that the number on the frame or off the data plate? Thanks

Actually Rick...that is the number painted on the inside of both doors and the hood sides. Here is the complete number. Can you translate it for me ? 04M39871053913735

0539 would indicate a 1970 or 71 M35 A2 w/w. The number on the frame should be 0539-13735 The 71 at the end of the first letters would indicate possibly a 71. Thanks

I'm not too sure about the "71" in the number on the doors indicating the model year. All Deuces had a registration number in addition to the VIN. In the old Vietnam era OD and white paint scheme, the hood was generally painted "U.S. Army" in white on one line and and the registration number in white on another line directly below.

My Deuce has a data plate on the dash that reads "Registration Number NK0082", which is unusually short for a registration number. I have seen other registration numbers beginning with one or two numbers, then one or two alpha characters, followed by as many as five numbers (but usually no more than 8 characters total). I suspect the "04M39871" was the registration number for that vehicle, especially as the 13735 serial number falls in the early to mid 1970 Kaiser Jeep serial number range. It is possible, but doubtful, that AM General duplicated SOME Kaiser Jeep serial numbers when they took over Kaiser Jeep in 1971. I'd suggest looking for another data plate on your truck indicating a registration number.

The following picture, courtesy of Dave, 67Beast, demonstrates the Vietnam era paint job with the registration number on the hood.

You may be right on that. The frame serial number is pretty consistent on the Kaisers but the AM G`S seem to be more difficult as they evidently used the first 2 numbers for several years.

Your serial number indicates a 1970 M35A2 with winch unless AM G did duplicate some serial numbers.

0524-10045. Paperwork I got says 73 but I have my doubts. Since the original data plate is gone and I have no contract numbers I wonder. Never seen any other deuce tractors made in 73 and never seen an AM General deuce tractor.

I can live with that. It was such a pain in the ass to get a title....72 it is.
On another note...the DMV folks couldnt find a slot to identify my truck in Nevada....so its an AMG Hummer....says so on the title. :)

Kenneth, it looks like yours should be a 1970. I don't think its worth changing how its registered, I just think its neat to see how close we can get to knowing the actual year. !970 must have been one of the largest production years, judging from the range of the sequential numbers. And how many on the forum have 1970`s.

Where is the frame number located? I too had quite a party getting mine titled because DRMO put 2 trucks on the same bill of sale. And State Farm didn't quite know what to do with it either. My agent took some pictures, then the main office said there was something missing on the front end, which was complete.
