I used a wire brush tosand down the exterior. That was miserable.

yeah, don't use a wire wheel lol. jJust use a DA with 80 grit sandpaper to knock it down so its smooth. Looks like everything that was flakey or needed fixed you already have. so use what you have on there as a half assed base then spray over it.
