I would add that I've found it really depends on your agent. Some agents just look at it and if it will be hard and you are not a regular customer of theirs, they don't want to mess with it. If one agent tells you something different than you've read on SS, check with another in a different office. Try to find an SS member in your area and go call whichever agent handles their policies. Chances are that agent has figured out what to do with 13,000+ lb vehicles and it will be a breeze for them.
Sometimes the ones that say others don't want to do the work are really only trying to make a sale. This conversation comes up repeatedly and as a former PROGRESSIVE CLAIMS MGR I can tell you, as a company, they do not want to insure MVs for a variety of reasons. Anyone using them to insure their deuce on a personal auto policy does not have insurance no matter what an agent tells you or sells you. That goes for all the s*ithouse lawyers out there that think they know everything. Look at what your policy (yes you do need to read it) says under "Your Insured Auto" and then what the definition of "Auto" is. If there is a weight restriction it will say so in one of those places. If there is a restriction on the number of axles it will say so. If it says that but your agent told you that the policy was good, he's either lying or is just stupid.
Telling a judge "my agent said I had coverage" will not keep you from hocking your house if you run over granny in her Escort. READ THE POLICY. If you are confused about the language PM me and I'll try to help. Yes each state is different but they generally have the same language and information in the same places.

Basically what I'm saying is don't trust what someone tells you. Verify for yourself that there is nothing in the language or definition of your vehicle or a specific "Exclusion" that will leave you high and dry. I love this hobby and don't want it ruined by people trying to save a buck on their insurance.

Progressive Commercial did my 915 for $160 a month. It took lots of effort by my agent to convince various risk managers to insure the truck. They do not want to insure tactical trucks.
$270 a YEAR for my 5 ton M820A2 from Gulfway Insurance. If you got money to burn please send me some...

I insured my M35A2 through American Family. They had no listing under American General for the M35 so they defered it to the home office. Came back as an American General (mine is) Hummer no less. Was told that was close enough and that would be $107 for a year. I have had a Ferret scout car and an Austin Champ with them (since sold both) and I bet they thought the deuce was easy.

One thing I'm not completely in agreement with. I understand the insurance company attempting to get out of covering an incident if you don't meet their policy 100%, they try to get out of everything for any reason.

But if someone gives the company every bit of information they ask for, including make, model, year and serial number, and the company writes the policy, they THEY made the mistake. When I get my insurance paperwork back in the mail, it comes directly from the company, not my local agent. That gives the company the opportunity to decline and cancel the policy if they see a problem. If I end up with my insurance card, and it matches my vehicle's information, any decent lawyer should be able to get the company to pay.

Yes, this could possibly be more difficult than having the proper policy to begin with (although I've seen 100% legit claims get denied), but it should still hold up.

I'm not worried about mine, they have all information, know its a MV, and they even double checked on it for me. I also don't have Progressive, who has a bad track record of ducking out on even legit claims.

the problem with gulfway is they wont insure a truck to be used daily, they only insure trucks for parades, shows and what not, i tried gulfway/hagardy and got the same thing, if i got in a wreck and had a bag of potting soil, a 2x4 or anything like that it would void my insurance policy, so for those who use gulfway and drive them around and use them for personal use. be warned, you get in a wreck they will shaft you and you will be ****ed. simple as that.

I'd force a redo on that one! Insuring a deuce as a Hummer may be close enough for the agent, but if you file a claim, will it be close enough for the underwriter? No, it won't. They will claim fraud, and you will have to lawyer up and go to court to prove that the agent misled you. If your lawyer can beat up their lawyers, your agent will have to take one on the chin and pay the claim out of his business malpractice insurance.

I've got State Farm on mine for the moment. I don't think I will stay with them in the long run though. $278 for 6 months is a bit steep. One poster a page back or so had State Farm for about half of what I'm paying.
That's with a perfect driving record, no accidents ever and a clean 10 year mvr.

I have state farm historic, according to my agent and my policy it is for personal use only, can not be used the most(I drive 1000+ miles a month in my work van). But I found no weight limit, axle limit, or exclusion for personal towing and use.

Can you tell us what it costs, and who your agent is?

Thanks!

The high rate may be due to a policy with a low deductible. Check to see what your deductible is. Companies like Gulfway have $1000 deductibles on any claim.

Also, I would appreciate it if you would check your policy, and see what the limits are: empty weight, number of axles, towing, uses... And an agents name would be useful too.

I got mine on 9-28, so I havn't received the actual policy yet. I will check it and post the findings when it gets here. If it's not just a low deductible then I need to keep shopping.

Well I am a long time progressive customer and I know that even with the same company coverage can very state by state so I called this morning to see what it would cost to add one of the ones I just won to our policy.

I do not use an agent, I buy direct and they quoted it at 250.98 per year with just liability, 250.00 deductible. He asked the weight and I said it is 13000 lbs and he said that was not a problem. That is with it insured as a recreational vehicle like a Motor home. Personal use is fine as long as it does not get used for commercial purposes. I was very clear that this was an ex military truck and he asked if it had been or would be modified in any way? But other than that the ex- military truck wasn't a problem either.

One thing you might want to double check on- when you are asked the weight, its usually the GROSS weight they want. They don't care what it weighs empty sitting in your driveway, they are concerned with what it could weigh full loaded going down the highway. I know all of my insurances have always wanted the gross weight. Mine didn't bat an eye when I told her it was almost 18k lbs.

mkcoen, i appreciate your input and agree everyone needs to read their policy and understand it for themselves, but I am not an insurance agent nor am i afilliated with any insurance companies. I have in fact found that the agent you get has a great deal to do with your experience. There are a lot of people with Progressive polices and I assure I have read mine. I am covered. I also assure you that it matters where you live, the laws in that state.

If you get told no by one agent, check with another, even who purports to represent the same company. You might get a different answer. Then read your policy to make sure it is what you were sold.
