I would think one of these could tow it without any problems. Get with a local dealer, and maybe he would loan a operator and tractor out for advertising. They like to show off their goods.
:idea:Hmmm....Possible P.R. stunt?

I can see it now.

"Stop on in here at Ruston Case Tractor supply! With ample power to tow this M-60 U.S. Army tank, there isn't much our tractors can't pull!!"

(Giant oversized vehicular traffic obstructions fill screen, all of us :not worthy:

in the background with banners that read,
"Steel Soldiers.com, OD Iron Rulez!")

Not only that, but once asked, any dealership would look like crap if they turned down the opportunity to help out a local museum. It would be bad PR for their business. (Just the little gears turning in my mind):roll::-D

Great idea! Get the idea in the local paper before you start. That wll get people talking and be sure to draw attention to the dealership if they say "No".

Frodo, when I saw the watermelon girl avatar, I thought "there's another guy who found a freakish avatar like frodo." Then I saw it was your avatar. Where do you come up with this stuff???:p

Tank

My first messsage here!

Anyway, I used to work on some recovered armor like this and I have one major thing to point out. Well more like 2.

Yes, it is true that it is extremely likely that this belongs to the govt. In fact there is no way that it doesn't.

They might just take it away if you recover it. They could and have, in the past, done more.

The thing to think about is if it was properly de-mill'd. If not you have an unregistered class 4 destructive device on your hands that was, to put it bluntly, stolen from the army. This is a fast track to felon land and removal of many rights. If the breach has been cut and a hole larger then the bore made in the high pressure area of the main gun has been drilled, you are probably ok.

As much as I hate these machines being dropped in the ocean as fish housing, you really don't want to get caught with your pants down...

-edit- I just read more of the thread. Good it belongs to a museum and didn't just "fall off the truck" durring an armor transision. Good work guys.

On moving, It is true that the track will stop them on flat ground, but they will creep on any grade. We had an old m88 to move these things. Even then with that monster it got kind of bad. An issue we also ran into with this sort of tank is that the track are sunk (happens to them all) I would be real carefull of the condition of the cooling tubes on the sunck part. If the end connectors and center guides are too seized it might break them off if they have degraded over the past 30 odd years.

This one also looks like it has the older replaceable style track pads. They tend to mess up the road a bit more then solid rubber track. I would wait for it to get cold before taking it down a normal road.

Actually the solid rubber tracks are the older type. The new one is the replaceable pad type. Just look at current issue M1A1's and the M60A3's. All of them have the replaceable pad tracks. The tracks are not hard on the asphault (unless its very thin) unless you start neutral steering them. We drive on asphalt quite a bit with the '60 and don't tear it up. In November I replaced all of the pads on one of the A3's and before that it was a little bit harder on the asphalt due to the metal being run on it.

I like the idea of moving it with a QuadTrac - although the sight of a REAL tracked vehicle would probably do some serious damage to its ego....better throw a tarp on that tank first.

I was taking the old replaceble and comparing them to the current issue solid rubber tracks mounted on hercs. When we recieved our new 88s they had the solid style and replacements were the same.

Funny thing is our m1s started with the solid rubber and moved to the replacable kind. The individ. track pads are about 2.5 times the size though.

Great vid of a quad track vs a m577. Great stuff, hate to see the damage that did to its tranny though....

I don't understand, was the engine and tranny demilled? if not, drive that sucker to the museum! I've seen them move locomotives down the road under their own power- why not a tank? clear everything with the Feds and the locals- DOT, have a police escort, put it in the paper as a parade and invite a bunch of MVs to travel with it, a glorious final tribute to a weapon of FREEDOM finally arriving at a fitting place of everlasting honor. And it could be a windfall to the museum, both in publicity and donations.

If the engine and tranny are demilled, it maybe out of luck but if not-
Tell the museum I will be there with as many tools as I can get in the truck and a jug of JP-8 (9 out of 10 diesel engines prefer JP-8 compared to either when the've been sitting:-D)

Also, it is sitting behind a NAPA- let me say that again, NAPA. I could fix anything if it was sitting right next to a NAPA.
