Beautiful work and a great thread. Thanks for taking the time to pic and post. Seeing others take the plunge keeps the rest of us waiting for parts ,time and capital excited and motivated. After years of body shop action i am sensitive to isocyanide and MEK. So i promised my wife i would only use alkyd enamels.
I will be using a custom mix of Home hardware's version of Tremclad. Its a urethane modified alkyd if i remember right..has better UV stabillity Vs. Tremclad or Rustoleum.
2 parts black
3 parts yellow
1 part red oxide
Thin with 10% laquer thinner and lay it down ..i like the lusterless look so i use all flat (you have to get the store to tint a medium flat base to get the yellow) but if you want a semi gloss sub in gloss black.

It sounds like you've had your share of experience in painting know-how.

Where did you pick all of that up?

I'd venture a guess that a guy gets real good at painting, living next to the ocean! Man I miss that place! There's nothing like Charlie don't Surf on Whiterock, Stanley Park, Fort Rodd Hill across the creek or that drive up the sea to sky highway. Visiting Stan in North Van is always a feast, Section 8 on the way near Little Fort, those Abbotsford tank boys, Western Command,..... We'll make a point of getting out there real soon. Thanks for the kind words Duane!

The G749 farm has been lonely so we have no idea if a tree makes a sound when it falls on your G749 roof rack! There wasn't any obvious damage to the frame but this 4" branch was driven through the plywood floor and into the ground.

PA140562.jpgPA140561.jpgPA140560.jpgPA140564.jpg

The brother and I were lucky enough to have a bobcat onsite so we started the clean up process....before I grabbed a camera.... and hope the military reserves will show up for a bonfire party before the year is out!

While checking out the damage the bro stumbles over a chunk of steel next to the base of the broken tree. This greenish tint showed up so it looks like we found parts to an Arkland plow as well as a mashed up part to a copper pot. Looks like someone made a profit today!

PA140568.jpgPA140567.jpg

I'm wrapping up a big project so really hoping to finally spend some time out here, oil some engines and get some more shots of these incredible Alberta sunsets. The T190 Tracked Bobtank just turned over 1010 hrs which I was lucky enough to catch.......while constantly monitoring all the gauges on the piece of equipment I am operating.....and Goose is quietly waiting for some much needed Goat time! Get at those projects before work gets in the way!

I went to work in a custom shop a couple of months after i got out of college for my heavy duty mechanics ticket. That wouldve been 1992. We built rods, drag cars worked on anything that brought cash into the shop.restored a ton of 67-72 chevy trucks and blazers..we also had a side gig splashing the crash cars for a loclally filmed tv show..they would show up early in the morning with a car/truck on the hook, some pics of the close up vehicle, then in the afternoon the tow truck would be dragging it out the door while we were still pulling the tape off..it was a lot of fun.
I dont do customer jobs anymore but i still have the shop.when you have MV's you make friends..the boys here were using avero paints because they are restoration "correct" .
But they were having issues getting it and blending after sun fade and staining rust etc.
We like to use our trucks in the bush and they see a lot of "trail pinstriping".
So i started digging for alternatives for my M37..avero is a non-alkyd enamel porus soft and i wanted a better ballance between application hazards and durabillity.
I ended up using alkyd industrial speed enamel from an outfit called Millz Paints in Delta..they are no longer there unfortunately. It worked well..was a semi gloss..thinned with xylene it was dry to the touch in 10 mins.but it went on thin so i had to do a bunch of coats.
Ive been in a buying/fabricating cycle for a few years now..not a lot of big chunks of time to commit to prep and paint..working at the shipyard is extremely demanding of time. So i chip away at the building end of things as i can.
By the summeri should have three maybe 4 ready for a round of paint..ill book some time off and let the green goodness rip.

Fall at the G749 farm

The adventure continues! It's good to be busy.....hey gents?

A Captain and a Warrant Officer walked into the G749 Farm......37 little Dragoons followed.

Under 60°F temps, the army cadets once again wheeled their training butts out to the farm for winter training this weekend. Winter training, winter camping.....maybe this time last year but it's only dropping to 45°F tonight and up to 55F tomorrow. ....winter camping.

It's been an ideal fall so Goose took the trip out last week to get ready to support the troops. It won't last forever because it's only 4 months until March and we all have an idea what's coming so enjoy the fall sunsets while you got them!

Wishing all those G749 lovers a safe and spooky halloween. It's a kind little community among those G749 kids and nothing shows the love more than a shirt. What a great bunch of guys....keeping the frozen Canadian warm.

I know how you boys like your ladies so I grabbed a pic of the fine little witch the troops brought along to soften the exercise. They had smoke generators, intense lighting set up in the bush, the officers dressed up in costume and the projector cycled scary pictures on the side of a sea-can.

PA280639.jpg PA280651.jpg

The Dragoon cadets do crash simulation rescue, night mapping, communications and once again Goose the Deuce got a lot of attention.

PA280646.jpgPA280644.jpg

Had an overcast sky most of the day but as the sun set, this sassy little chinook arch started rolling in from the north and it provided a cool backdrop for photos. The darkness on the left is the last waft of cloud keeping the heat in and we're looking at freezing temps tonight. It's still one of the nicest falls I recall so a little cold and snow for Halloween won't be so bad if the nights look like this.

PA280649.jpgPA280647.jpgPA280650.jpg

Goose also became Goose the boost when communications dragged down this LSVW with my favorite number on the side. The other number that popped up and will be pretty cool for the next thousand miles is the 56' Deuce turning over 56000 miles on her current odometer.

G749 clean up.

After stuffing sea cans with marginally smoke damaged inventory four years ago, we finally found the time to get started. Sent staff out to buy tents to cover wet concrete on a rainy day some ten years ago. They came back with these snappy little chapel tents. They are certainly suited for this ritual and should work to keep snow off things while we pick warm days to gut the hut. Dearly beloved, we are gathered here to find nos transmission parts and fulfill thy wish to be shelved and organized.

Volunteered at the Aviation Museum a wee bit ago and they called when a big'ol pile of warehouse racking was being thrown out so we're also going to get the G749 parts off the ground....yaaaaaa. I'm also thinking these can be used as a frame for a roof over the M207 shop van so Gracie might be getting a temporary shed. Me and Mickey Mouse are hoping for some good weather so we can assemble something.....stay tuned.

It's been all work and no play so don't forget to spend a few minutes on your hobbies.

PB190700.jpg

While the bro and I moved around the farm today, the deer that know it's hunting season moved around with us.....or behind us, or ahead of us. It's 80 acres that doesn't get hunted and we HERD the deer know where they're safe. Here's a little run of photos of our Deerly beloved support team and a night shot of 3 on a hill waving goodbye as we leave. Saw one taking huge leaps across the cropland the other day....could have been Prancer..... and it's only 5 weeks until Christmas so they're probably getting ready.

G749 fast freeze

This should be shoved in the how cold am I thread but since you asked......it's the first day since spring that we can say it's cold. Sitting at 1°F....one above zero...and headed for 4 below tonight.
Just amazing working outdoors with gloves off, flying the RC's yesterday and today seeing frozen cars everywhere. If it really does warm up like the forecast says......we shall call it MVironmental warming.

How's things down south?

I would like some input from you on the latest technology and affordability in home furnaces. The 1000 sq.ft. basementless bungalo and the 440 sq. ft. G749 repair garage don't need it quite yet but they're asking!

It's only 100 sleeps until March so the ride will be short, whatever it is. The current forecast is for a roller coaster back up to warm temps after getting punched in the face by a quick Siberian Low.
Real goofy forecasts rolling out still with 10 degree changes every 24-48 hrs so I grabbed a few screen shots to share the fine forecast work. I'm digging out the camping gear!

We dropped to -18f about 3 weeks ago, got some decent snow. It's been cold here till this past week-not too much of the day is above freezing. Warming up now again. Suppose to be low 60s Wednesday-yippe, but for how long? Fired off the g749 this afternoon over lunch-think I'm gonna put some hay in the back and use it for the hay wagon just for a good excuse to use it. What do most people heat with up there-oil, natural gas, propane, electricity?

And here I've been complaining about temps in the 40's and 50's. Can't say I miss the weather out there. Sure do miss the sunsets though.

When are you going to get that transmission done, or am I going to have to fly out there and do it myself?

That Deuce hay ride sounds brilliant. Easy Clean up, cosy ride....lots of horsies to pull the load, awesome.

We're on Natural gas and running a down-draft Ducane with a Honeywell ST9120C fan timer, a SV9501 Smart valve...lol....and an ignitor wire that hangs too close to the flame, melting often. Just wondering if there are any brand names that walk longer and prouder than others. You know, nothing runs like a Trane.

We are so close to pulling the new parts out of the sea-can I smell the discussion between non-detergent, atf and hy-tran. I'm guessing you have a machine shop at your finger tips that fit in your mini cooper and you'll pack it in your carry-on?

As one can imagine...anytime an engineer labeled a piece of equipment like a Honeywell smart valve-smart it's probably significantly less than smart, it's a POS

You nailed it, that's funny. It certainly deserves the laughing out loud letters. I'm on my 4th or 5th smart valve in about 12 years at around $400 - $500 a pop. Smart way to make lots of sales and even smarter to allow it to fail when it's working the hardest in the middle of winter.....which is the only time it would fail.

If I leave the cover off the furnace face where the ignitor wire is.... it melts less often. Tried an aluminum shield but it melted into the wires so I replaced 3 ignitors last year alone.....at $80.00 each.

I just want a furnace that doesn't need it's own shelf in replacement parts sitting on standby.

The G749 garage is running a 70's Coleman, natural gas, stand-up/ down draft furnace that just keeps on ticking......but the time is neigh.
