Banks Turbo - I bit the bullet

I called Banks and the price was $500 more than I could find online ... Can I just get the Banks manifold and the the part that goes on the intake manifold?

Where did you find the kit for $1600??? shipped???

As far as the manifold... it has a part number and when I talked to Rich, he said he always had guys calling buying parts for used kits they bought.

So I pulled the exhaust pipes and mufflers out last night... pretty simple. Only one flange stud came out.

These mufflers look to be in pretty good shape and fairly new. If anyone in the KC area wants them, let me know. They are free.

I was looking at the filter box and where it will mount. Anyone with a banks kit and and M1009 know if I will need to cut the front battery tray?

Banks told me $2500. I found it online for around $2000. The only difference was when I asked about getting the turbo from the Ford kit. They told the turbos where about the same price so they could just put the kit together with the turbo I wanted. But I can get it online for $2000 buy the turbo I want and sell the other. I bet if I called one of the Banks suppliers that sell the kit cheaper they can just order it with the other turbo too.

I spent $2196 shipped. 214 lbs.

I don't know about any of that... but I do know that if you call a supplier, you will be waiting because Banks had to put a kit together for me as they don't stock it anymore. They had to have the muffler made because it was for an M1009 and is a bit different than the truck muffler.

A supplier might sell it for $2k but add shipping... back to the price I paid... I'd rather get it from the mfg and work out any issues with them... suppliers tend to flake once they get their money.

Call and talk to Rich. Tell him you want the same price as Jason in Kansas City. In today's economy I bet they will come down from their retail to make a sale. i called a week after the sale was over.

Yes...

Monday... I got the intake body on and pulled the exhaust... Major t-storm rolled in...

Tuesday... I got the oem fuel pump off... another major t-storm rolled in...

Wednesday... Left front caliper on my wifes van was sticking... worked on that...

Thursday... What I did on Wednesday didn't solve the brake issue on my wife's van... replaced both front calipers...

When it rains... it pours. (pun intended)

The only pictures I have are of the exhaust laying on the ground, an empty under carriage and the pressure chamber. They are at home on the camera..

Sorry fellas... this has not been a week for my projects.

Two things...

1. Is anyone running a banks system AND a right hand alternator?

2. Whoever said the new delco 60gs glow plugs would not swell did not tell the truth... mine are less than a year old and stuck. How do I get these suckers out?


I asked about the fuel pump pushrod... I didn't realize that there was a plate under the pump... once I took that off the rod slid out.

You have to cut down the old bolts or get new ones if you are removing the oem pump

I also cut out about 2 feet of the oem steel fuel line that went to the pump and bent the line straight up toward the oem filter thus removing about 4 feet of fuel line.

If you are going to attempt to install this system...

REMOVE THE REAR BATTERY TRAY DURING THE INSTALL.

What do you guys with banks systems do with the front battery tray? Seems the civi tray is prolly different. The Military tray extends to where the filter box needs to sit.

Ideas?

I went down to LMC truck and bought a new civi right-hand tray.... only way to go.


Now, I am running the oil line and it calls fro removing the 1/4" plug above the oil filter.. I says to use a 14" NPT plug remover... where do I get one of those? I tried a 3/8" to 1/4" reducer but it just twisted it.

o.k. now I want one insted of the surgery.:-D how much of a preformance gain can I expect. and what are the limitations? and how much beter would I be with a 6.5 turbo? this would be for my disasembeld waiting for a new paint gun 1009.

More pics...

I called the local NAPA and they didn't have a cross-reference for Snap-On tools. Nor did they have an 1/4" NPT plug extractor... but they did have a impact rated 3/8" to 1/4" reducer that, by the way, has NPT printed on the side of it.


The bracket that holds the oil cooler lines needs to be ground down so the 90 elbow for the oil supply will fit. I took off all of the end right to the welded on bolt.

The anti-depression vent hose that comes with the kit is about 6 inches too short. I has to splice in a section so it is a bit unclean. I think a better option would be for banks to make it a bit longer or for the customer (me) to find a civi unit.

Adjusting the fuel supply was actually pretty easy. Take off the high idle, remove the cover, drain the diesel, rotate the engine to get the adjustment screw lined up, remover the guide stud pull out the gov assemble and adjust... then put it back. The only thing that you have to make sure of is the metering valve spring is above the guide stud... easy once you get into it.

Oh and who ever said that there was a small window on the side to do this... bollocks.\

I did a bit more heat shielding than is in the pic...

Since I removed the oem fuel pump I rerouted the diesel fuel supply and return. you can see in the fuel pump pic that I removed the steel fuel line that went up from the pump and under the intake runners... no sense in having it there if I am not using.

I got the the exhaust installed (no pics yet). That took a couple hours and I had to figure out where to shorten the pieces. I ended up taking out a total of about six inches from three different pipes. It fits very nice and I won't be using the chrome tip... (anyone wanna buy a 3" chrome exhaust tip :p )

I bought a 2 wheel drive Sub with a 6.2/Banks kit on it, the plumbing from the drivers side manifold goes between the crossmember and the oil pan, looks like on the 4x4's it goes on the outside. . . DAMN!!!

Where does the turbo sit? What year is the suburban? The newer models had th turbo sitting to the middle of the manifold

wait, if your cross over tube comes forward then goes between the cross member and oil pan then straight up... our turbo manifolds are different. If it were the same manifold, your crossover tube would need to bend down and cross under the cross member then reverse direction to get to where my turbo mani port is.
