Ok just a thought the left race is the old one the right is new there is a small grove in the left race from the seal is it possible the oil leaked by because of a worn ware surface?

I used a slide hammer with a two jaw puller without the jaws on it. placed the puller in behind the seal retainer with needle nose pliers and threaded the slide hammer in. What a pain in the rear with gloves on and wrapping the slide with a towel my hands hurt 20-30 minutes of hammering it...
Thank you for you kind words, true not a lot of money saved but I really like the older gauge style and was bummed when it stopped working. I figured I had nothing to loses so I opened it up to have a look and maybe learn a little about it.
