Also, do a search, theres a good article about the Forestry Service conversion, and if you do it EXACTLY as instructed, you will have -0- problems. I have done literally Hundreds of these....My own personal truck, a 84 M1009. Haven't have a problem starting her in over 6 years.
As the military parts starts to dwindle and all, you can convert to 12 volt fairly easily. The only 24 volt parts on these trucks are the Starters. While I do love the 24 volt system, and they are not that hard to troubleshoot after you've been in the repair business working on these things for...
On the firewall just to the left of the brake booster. Contols your glowplugs. Check those too to be sure they're working. After you turn your key on, you should hear a thud after about 10 to 15 seconds....Those glowplugs ought to be nice and hot. Shows up really well on IH should you have a...
Am running the same type setup. For you thrifty guys out there, you can pick up a plain jane spin on base with filter at Tractor Supply for 40 someodd dollars. all you gotta do then is go to the fitting and reduce down to 3/8's npt. Quick, easy, simple. O'Reillys has them for about $40 or...

The Towtruck driver said they have a mechanic there at the towing place that can...

Autometer is the best, easiest, cheapet way to go. About 135 bucks for tach and pickup. If you want accuracy, go with Isspro Diesel tach. Pickup is extra, not included.....just depends what you want....
