I have never seen M1 turrets for sale, just stripped hulls. The hulls are required to be cut into pieces no bigger than 3x3 feet if I remember correctly, but I am not sure on that.
I managed to gather all the parts for around $650 or so. I have not yet done the conversion, but I am planning on it taking a full day. Periodically you will find complete kits on E-Bay for around $1200, these are used take offs.
Yeah, and they are required to be cut up on site. I saw a pile of them at Anniston that were being chopped up a couple of years ago, along with some ribbon bridge sections.

Just checked for the first time a few minutes ago. I have a parts truck that still has the tranny in it. truck was a runner til a rod came through the block. Shouldn't take too long to drop the tranny out the bottom and get it ready to...
If the oil is coming in through the center tube, you can build a checkvalve to go there. Use a large ball bearing and machine a seat in the tube. A 2 pound spring and a retainer to hold it in place, then cross drill the tube so when the ball moves up with oil pressure it will have no flow...
As for wanting to run only with the choke pulled out....
Is the idle mixture set properly?
Is there a vacuum leak?
Is the carb float low?
Are the carb passages varnished up?
Is the idle stop screw set properly?
Any of these can cause the condition you describe.
Loosen the nut, then put a hydraulic jack between the end of the lunette and the frame. Apply liberal pressure. Now, smack the socket that the lunette fits in with a big hammer. That is how I loosened up one of mine to flip it.
I am quite fond of my muffler. I originally had a C turbo, couldn't stand the screeching on a long trip. The D sounds nice, I can hear it spooling (quietly) when I accelerate. The muffler looks like it belongs there, so I am happy.
Lots of the old brass tags had black laquer in the letters. Wipe on the black, the wipe off with a piece of card stock and some blotting paper. Leaves the black down in the stamped letters.
