Voltmeter
I opened up the dashboard where I could get at the back of the voltmeter and started the truck.
I used the DMM to read the voltage at the terminals.
Engine running caused the voltmeter to read about 23 volts.
I touched every combination of terminals with the DMM and couldn't get...
I'll be darned. It worked! I never would have figured that out. Thank you.
But I can't figure out how the bungee is used. Under my troop seats there is a place with a screw of some sort. It looks like a strap or something was there, but they have all been cut off or removed.
Steve
So that's what those things are for! I found the H blocks in my truck bed, but had no idea what they were for. I almost threw them out thinking they were junk left in the truck.
My H blocks don't have bungees or clips. Where can I buy them?
How are they used?
Thanks, Steve
My M1078 has troop seats in the back bed. They seem to be thin fiberglass. I've seen pictures showing the troop seats folded up, I guess for more cargo room.
How do you get the seats to stay folded up?
Thanks, Steve
What a relief my alternator is working.
My truck is a 1997.
I've already checked the battery connections. Are there other connections in between the alternator and the battery box?
By the way, thank you for helping. It is really appreciated.
Steve
With engine running and measurements taken on alternator I read 14 volts and 28.5 volts.
With the engine off and reading at the alternator I read 12.8 volts and 25.8 volts.
The dashboard voltage meter is reading again. The needle is vibrating/bouncing between 26 - 27 volts. Kind of hard...
Well, I finally have some more info with my pretty new DMM.
The alternator puts out both 12 volts and 24 volts according to the DMM. I take it that the alternator is working correctly. What should I check next and how should it be done?
Thanks, Steve
I found the alternators manufacturer. Here is a link to trouble shoot their alternator:

OK. I've made some progress. The problem is no longer intermittent it is full time. No 28 volts showing on volt meter, only 14 volts. Circuit breaker CB-20 was not tripped and seems OK.
Cab is up (storm coming).
I've looked over the alternator for corroded connections and all looked well...
I am really glad you told me about the transmission and the voltage. I had no idea the trans needed voltage. Hopefully, tomorrow I can try and test the voltage. The volt meter on the dashboard dropped to half which is why I noticed the problem.
My M1078 has developed a generator problem I think. When I start it up the voltmeter reads about 27 volts. After about 3/4 mile of travel the voltmeter drops down to about half.
Can this be normal?
Can the truck be driven like this?
What should I trouble shoot?
I checked the battery...
I will look for one on my truck this weekend.
I have been enjoying learning about my truck. It's a big part of the fun of owning it. I've owned large straight jobs in the past, but none have been as complex as the M1078.
The M1078 gets 7 MPG and 55 MPH is as fast as the truck goes, comfortably.
When you get the engine hot running at that speed the air clutch will scream on and scare you to death the first time. After that you can't talk in the truck with the clutch howling.
Many, many parts seem to be readily...
On my M1078 I have a rotating beacon switch in the top left corner of the dashboard, but no rotating beacon. On the outside back of my cab is a small cannon plug type connector with just a two wire/two hole.
I looked up the cannon plug and it is for a rotating beacon.
Using my incredible...
The truck starts better than me in 40 degree temperatures. I need socks and two comforters at night! 0 degrees would be fatal to a Floridian!
Anyhow, my truck does start when cold and blows smoke briefly.
Thank you for the ether can part number. I have the switch mentioned in the upper left...
I have a few more civilian part numbers for your excellent list:
Windshield #12414360
Air Clutch for cooling fan is made by Borg Warner and part #1009-09000-01
Cooling Fan is again Borg Warner part #4735-43783-13
Thanks, Steve
