It's been getting real cold here in north Florida. When I start my M1078 after a cold night (40 degrees F - don't laugh you guys up north) it blows a lot of smoke out of the exhaust pipe.
I have had many diesel engines, but most had some variety of glow plug to use before starting.
My M1078...
I've been having a good time in my new 1997 M1078. What a good truck. People tend to get out of my way!
Anyhow, what civilian lubricants and filters do I put in my M1078?
Engine Oil
Transmission Fluid
Hydraulic Fluid
Anti-Freeze
Differential Oil/Grease
Air Filter
Don't know all other filters...
My Conclusion
Today I went to my local DMV to see the agent I was told would help me.
When I got there she said she didn't know what to do. She was told to issue my title and tag, but she still could not access anything to do with FMV.
I said since you were told to issue them, it would be OK...
I have only posted exactly what DMV in Tallahassee told me. It should come as no surprise that individuals in a position of authority often interpret statutes to suit their beliefs. To fight them is expensive.
If you would like to be confused further here is a link directly to the statute governing FMR's.

That's right. I asked that exact question of DMV. The statute reads any former military vehicle has to be titled and registered as such. Even a Chevy pick up or blazer or jeep.
Not to mention that it has to have the correct paint and markings. If it doesn't have it they won't title or tag...
The purpose of the new Military Vehicle tag is so cops can spot the vehicle as such and cite you.
But, I kind of think it is unlikely you would get a ticket if you are reasonable with the cop.
If you own a FMV with annual renewable tag you are expected to go to DMV and tell them so your title...
Two weeks ago I bought a Steward & Stevenson M1078. The seller signed his valid title over to me.
Here is a very short version of the story.
I went to Lake City DMV to get my new title & tag. After two hours they said they could not issue them to me because I had a former military vehicle...
I Got It!
I decided to use a wheel/gear puller. The first one I found in my shop had two legs. Once I finally got it on and tightened it up one leg broke. Back in the shop I found a three legged puller. I attached it to the clutch plate and finally it came off fighting me all the way.
Then...
The plate hasn't moved. Today, I am going to look for a gear puller that will fit. I have about 6 pullers, but none of them fit right. I hope I can pull the plate loose.
There isn't enough room to get a drill in between the radiator and the plate.
Fan Clutch Photo
Here is a picture of my problem. You see the one nut in the center of the air clutch. Around it you will see the plate that I cannot remove. It is the slightly shiny round plate. All the allen head screws are out. Allen head screw at the 3:00 o'clock position is ground off...
Yes, it is the Cat 3116 engine.
I am going after the plate with a screwdriver and a hammer.
I'll get some pictures.
I went to the National Guard Armory in town and the mechanics were very nice and helpful. They took me to see one of their trucks and I saw the clutch assembly wad different...
I am referring to the very first plate you encounter when removing the fan/clutch assembly. It has to be removed before anything else. The military service manual calls it a "fan support plate". It is held on with 6 allen head screws. It is not inside or between anything. It could be called...
My fan is way loose. Obviously needs new fan and clutch.
How do I get the plate off that is in front of the clutch? I have the allen head screws out, but the plate won't budge? I have no idea what to do next? My Kingdom for help!
Thanks, Steve
Oh, Boy a problem. One allen head stripped out. Now the socket in the head is rounded out. No allen head wrench will fit into it. I have been trying to grab and unscrew it with vice grips, but it isn't working. Some of those allen head screws were very tight.
Can I use a grinding wheel to...
