M1010 for my daughter the field biologist

Yes, I see the usual voltage drop when the glow plug controller turns on the glow plugs. When I had a GP Controller failure, I could still start without glow plugs. It took extra cranking, especially if it was cold, but it reliably started. Now it cranks happily, but I get no hint of ignition.

I have 12V at the pink wire when the ignition is in "run".

The shim was there on the old starter. I re-used it. I'll need to pull the cover and measure to see if it's really required, but the starter works great. We undercoated the truck before moving it north to New England winters. Perhaps that's the oil leak you mention? New IP is certainly a...

Thanks all. I got a new direct drive starter from Hillbilly Wizard. I put it in today and it works great. The truck still doesn't start, but the starter cranks beautifully and it makes no nasty grinding noises. I'm hating Napa right now. The flex wheel teeth I could see looked undamaged...

I've been working from the -20. It says the pump is between the tank and the filter.

But the fuel pump is upstream of the filter, so the filter is under pressure, not vacuum, so any leak there would leak fuel out, not air in, right? I thought air leaking in happened between the tank and the pump, where the pressure is negative... When the engine is at idle, does the IP suck...

M1010 for my daughter the field biologist

My daughter went to grad school, so the CUCV is mine for a while longer. I installed a ham radio rig, since she spends so much time far beyond cell phone range. I got that working pretty well, and then the fuel system started acting up. The engine "stumbled" a few times one day, then it...

Broken Jeep, Belfast ME to Jackson, FL. recommend transporter?

Hi. I need to get a price quote for moving a broken jeep from Belfast ME to Jacksonville, FL. It needs a new frame, and the frames available in the northeast are all destroyed from the road salt. I'd appreciate any recommendations on transportation providers/options/etc. I know it's a...

"Hey Dad, can I borrow the truck?" "Sure", I say. Then somebody sends me this video. SS-relevant part starts at 1:15. WARNING: Audio is Not Safe For Work (NSFW). Use Headphones or mute your volume.

What have you done to your CUCV today/lately - Part 2

https://youtu.be/0SS-11bTM34 I took a video of mine, above, when was trying to understand why it wouldn't pump. The silver metal part toward the top of the frame has a "finger" that rides on the top of the rotating plastic part. When that finger is on top of the rotating plastic part, the...

    In cab diagnostic port

STE/ICE is the name of the box that plugs into the diagnostic port. If you search for that on SS, you'll find a lot. The wiring diagrams in the TMs show you where all the wires in that port go. Here is the manual...

This one is compact and relatively inexpensive. It uses a screw, not a hammer. You hold the blue part with a box or socket wrench and drive the screw with a 3/8 socket or impact wrench. I looked at the hydraulic ones. They look great for someone who does a lot of crimping. For the...

M1010 for my daughter the field biologist

I clean & abrade the surfaces with a stainless steel brush, coat generously with no-ox-id, and crimp firmly. Some folks use an impact wrench on the crimper. I've never felt the need to do that. You can over-crimp and fatigue the wire, making it mechanically more likely to fail. The tool is...

M1010 for my daughter the field biologist

Jump box was fully charged, but provided no juice. The problem was obvious once I opened it up. Had crimper and spare terminals in the truck, so the fix was easy. It's nice to have the stuff you need on hand in a dark parking lot late at night.

M1010 for my daughter the field biologist

No. The glow plug controller fried *after* I replaced the fried starter and the heat-damaged insulation. The glow plug system was healthy after the old starter fried. The new starter was healthy when the GP controller was fried. I half suspect the shop that installed my new starter may have...

M1010 for my daughter the field biologist

The new Glow Plug Controller works great. After a few days sitting in freezing temperatures, the truck starts *much* easier with the glow plugs. I was actually surprised how easily it started without the glowplugs. I normally crank for about half a second before it fires. Without the...

M1010 for my daughter the field biologist

It's getting better. I now have 13V on the front battery and 14v on the back battery 5 minutes after turning off the truck after 90 minutes on the highway. The trickle charger has the recently-depleted front battery up to 13.9v, still in bulk mode. It switches to absorption at 14.4V, and then...

M1010 for my daughter the field biologist

I'm confused. Perhaps someone with more experience will read this and know what's wrong. My truck has the Plan B Mod -- no DUVAC, 24V lower alt, 12V upper alt. It also has the Doghead relay mod. Here are things I know for sure: A battery terminal clamp failed -- it just broke. The starter...
