The one with the groves in it is found in cj's and the m38 jeeps, MB/gpw/m38a1 all used an drum with an external band. I can tell it is not an m38a1 transfer case because of the vent behind the shifters. The m38a1 transfer case would be set up for a fording line to come of the breather.
Lots of good ww2 jeep parts, two ww2 mb/gpw tubs, at least one combat wheel. I did see an m38 frame. Good find, wish it was in NH I would be all over it.
Not my jeep but some photos to help. Dash plate http://www.2mypc.net/m38-cdn/thumbnails/tn-m38_1324.jpg the serial number will be on the plate on the lower right. This page will also help you http://www.willysmjeeps.com/v2/modules.php?name=Forums&file=viewtopic&t=946&highlight=
No m38 has no VIN number on the frame. It can only be found in two place on the m38, the dash panel, either screwed directly to the dash, or riveted to a panel that is screwed to the dash (early m38's each data plate is individually screwed to the dash, later ones are mounted to the plate...
M38 frame has hinges where the grill mounts and is boxed from the front cross-member to the front bumper. I think it is a cj3a frame because it does not have the gussets a cj2a frame has, but it is hard to see from the photos for sure.
Hard to tell from the photos if it is a cj2a frame or cj3a. The body is m38. Let me know if you want any specific photos of an m38 as I can take some of mine.
The frame is not m38. The body is an m38 body, along with m38 engine (I only say this because it has a lot of m38 parts on it), carb and a few other m38 parts.
