    Starter started smoking

I bought a brand new gear reduction starter from eBay for $140. That didn't seem unreasonable to me. The peace of mind with a new starter was worth it as well.

    M1009 Fuel Gauge Problem Fix

My fuel gauge stopped working (stuck on full at about 3 o'clock) and it made me crazy trying to find the problem. Took out the tank, grounded the pink sending unit wire and then grounded the black ground wire from the sending unit. No movement from the gauge at all. Then I took the gauge out and...

    replacing bumpers on m1008

Chrome bumpers should bolt right up, if you replace them with the same style already there. The only thing you should have to buy are chrome bumper bolts if you wish to change the subdued bolts already there, as well as a (rubber) bumper impact strip (if the style you buy needs them). Removal of...

    U Joint again?

I replaced a u-joint in my M1009 that was tight as you describe. It was a bear but I kept trying and finally was able to force the clip on. I was concerned as well because the new joint seemed to be binding. I put it in and 1,000 miles later it loosened up and seems fine. I know it's loose now...

M1009 - Hard starting when Cold

My M1009 starts great, but once in a while it will resist, especially in cold weather. I then check the glowplugs (disconnect the glowplug, connect a test light to the positive battery terminal and the glowplug in question. If the test light lights up, the glowplug is good. If not, replace that...

What have you done to your CUCV today/lately? - Part 1

I installed one of those large interior dome lights from an old police car in my M1009. Now there is plenty of light inside to see things in the dark.

    Shifting the transfer

Sometimes it is impossible to shift my M1009 into 4Lo, but I just put it into park and try again. If it doesn't go in after that, it will go in when i put it back into neutral. It also grinds from time to time. The transfer case works fine and this is my second cucv. The previous one did the...

Spring 2011 Rausch Creek MV Rally

Just making sure someone else will be there. You can't go on the trails alone. By the way, no, I don't trailer it everywhere. Ha ha ha.

I just checked the weather for Friday. It said snow showers. Does everyone who is going on Friday still intend to go?

    M1009 Roadtrip question

There shouldn't be any problems if it drives ok for small trips. I have used mine as a daily driver to work for weeks at a time (85 miles roundtrip) and also taken it on a six hour, 375 mile trip from Moab, Ut to Denver, Co over the Rocky Mountains with no reliability issues.

    Alternator trouble

It sounds like a bad or not re-connected ground strap or wire after the head gasket replacement. There are several that reside on top of and the sides of the motor and might explain the erratic electrical problems.

    longest trip in a cucv

I drove from Moab, Ut to Denver, Co (375 miles) in my 1986 M1009 in six hours on a really hot day in mid-July. There were no problems and is was not too uncomfortable with the driver's window open. The Rocky Mountain section was interesting because it lost some power near the top at about 11,000...

    What's this for?

There is actually some type of equipment that detects chemical and biological agent contaminants that attaches to that bracket. It's shape is similar to a military fuel or water can. Check out the photo below. I use that bracket in the rear of my M1009 to mount a 5 gallon military water can. You...

    Need CUCV starter.

I just picked up my 1986 CUCV Blazer from Wright Patterson, Ohio and flat towed it to Carmel, NY. No problems but there is no starter. Is there anyplace I can buy one? I see there are the later model 24 volt high-torque starters available on e-Bay, but I have been told these are not the best...
